Tolerance is nice and all, but has it been carried to far by the "politically correct" nazis? Wouldn't a truly tolerant society allow people to be intolerant if they so chose?

Yes they should.

In a thread I made the other day someone pointed out that in Germany only a Democratic party is allowed to take power. Which is very discriminating for other parties. A communist government might get 99% of the vote but they would still not be allowed in.

yes, but the question is not if tolerance happens in todays society, but if a truly tolerant society is paradoxical.

i see what you mean about the paradox, but i dont thnk its so complicated. i cansee it 2 ways: a tolerant society is made up of people, and those people are all tolerant, which is what makes the society so. case 2: a tolerant society is by majority tolerant, and theere are a few intolerant people there, who are tolerated by the rest interesting little thought game.

but i think that political correctness is being taken too far. people shouldnt be afraid to berate one group/idea/person/thing/whatever. negative thoughts are human. the same for positive things, you would then argue that the individual is not being politically correct in not recognizing that another group is 'just as good'

if people lose the impulse to be negative or to react negatively/positively to things that they have had experience with before it kind of subverts the whole point of life lessons. people would become homogenous acceptance drones, and without any conflict/competition individuality would be forfeit.

as for fat people, in most cases it is lack of excersize (thats like the hardest word for me to try to spell) and an improper diet to blame. even with a shitty metabolism, you can prevent weight gain and keep your body healthy. as for thinking they are freaks, that is ignorant. i have an obese sister and an overweight brother - they are regular people who have less self control in the way they maintain thier bodies. as for 'its a virus' give me a break. whats the vaccine? no mcdonalds and excersize?

i dont know how much sense this post made, hopefully you can decode it and find out what i was trying to say. i am in no way promoting hate groups, gross intolerance, etc. but there is a useful place for stereotyping, and for intolerance towards certain things, like incopetence and ignorance.

A truly tolerant society would be able to tolerate intolerance that is correct. However, the average intolerant person usually is unable to maintain a degree of rational objectivity and this is where emotion begins to cloud judgement. When the level of emotional involvement becomes critical this is where the disagreements have tended to become violent. Then this raises the question, should a truly tolerant society be tolerant to violence to and by it's populace?

The Universe is "Naturaly" inclined to be paradoxical. The perfect society would mimic the universe in chaotic-order. You don't even have the chance to vote for them because an extreme party (that has plans to overthrow the democratic government even by being voted for) wouldn't be allowed in the first place. But when I see what kind of people they are with really not only weird but really destructive attitudes there are, I'm kinda glad that they don't have the chance to gain power. Still, it's not a real Democracy.

About tolerance, I try to be tolerant but not because I have to I'm just treating people how I'd like to be treated, that's all. I think we should have the right to be intolerant too but I know if I'd suffer from intolerance every day because I was different I wouldn't be the one saying : "hey it's a democracy, these people have the right to hate me and be mean to me" It depends on what side you're on really.

I am not obese b/c I don't eat when I am not hungry and I excercise. Don't give me that crap about [insert hormone here] imbalances or whatever. Unless they are in the 0.01th percentile, then most definately whatever imbalance the fat person has is due to.... lack of excercise, laziness and eating for the joy of eating when they are not even hungry. You can't have a fat lifestyle and not be fat w/o having problems with your body chemistry due to all the bs diet crap out there.
