Ok i just tried to download the new linkin park cd and all i got was this dummy song saying that the cd will be out soon.

Now i know we are download the songs for free but, if the recoard people realeass a dummy song, y dont we just take them off our computers and stop the speed of them, so we would only have the real stuff!
Yes my spelling sucks, I know that and it can't be changed

The record companies intentionally flood the market with dummy songs as a countermeasure for the growing number of rips that emerge with each new album. My guess would be that a decent amount of the people sharing the dummy songs are directly working with or for the RIAA, or other MP3-nazi's like them. They'll always be there, just like the actual songs will always be there at least a month before the album debuts publicly. Get .datview if you don't feel like wasting the time of downloading a full song. Nice and easy. Three minutes, and you know whether it's real or a loop/dummy.

Otherwise, thinking that there's any way to stop dummying/looping is about as vain of a cause as thinkng you can ever stop bootlegging itself.

i can see y they do put out the dummy files, and it works untill a few people get there hands on the real one and then those files start to spread more so peopel can get the real files. I also have cable so even though i download a dummy file i can find the real one and download it again, and its not big deal, so either way i get my rip, cant the companies just make it less painfull for me and then they dont have to pay some one to spread the dummy files.

/me guesses that the companies will make it less painful for you when you make it less painful for them and shell out $20 for a shiny piece of plastic. (which cost about $5 to produce, including packaging) Paying somebody to spread the dummy files is a lot cheaper then the pay cuts they'd have to inflict on slick, preppy record exec's who's primary function is to sit on their ass and make superstars feel important. It's corporate. Just like the telco's in the 80's got spanked by phreaks, it's only a mater of time before CDwhores incorporated realizes that the only way to win is by making us think we've won, which should be the next logical step sometime soon. As long as they try employing intrusive countermeasures to track digitally copied files, somebody will find a way around it. Add a digital watermark? Fuck, just loop the line out on your soundcard and press record. Boom. Special coding on the CD's so they don't work in computers? Hell, pop it into the home stereo and move the mike up real close. (I know this would work like shit, it's just for example.)

The point is that trying to stop the RIAA's childish attempst at piracy counteraction is like arguing about the supposed "War on Drugs". All the bitching in the world isn't going to stop it, it just gives you something to do. If you want to make a point, write your congress people. I've still got the response to my letter on Napster from J. Sensenbrenner, which proves that they at least read the shit you send them.

Hahahah - digital watermarking is not that easy to get around. Also, there is no method that will ever truely stop a PC from reading a CD. Will. Not. Happen.

You can play the file at least once, yes? As long as my laptop has a line out and a line in, it's about that easy...

Only if it's a crappy watermarking technique. Microsoft demonstrated a watermarking that still worked after it was played and recorded back in a noisy room.

How awful for you, I'm almost crying, try not being a thief and buy some originals for once, I hear these are usually fairly good in quality.

Seriously , how can you bitch about something you have little rights to be stealing in the first place?
