  • America fucking sucks.

I live in a country that would rather show people getting cut in half or having their brains devoured than show a human breast.

I live in a country that can actively outlaw the blatent descrimination of others of another race, yet at the same time can deny gay/lesbian couples of the right to marry.

Here, the cost of living rises so regularly in some places that those living on the national minimum wage are considered below the poverty line.

We deny ourselves significant scientific research that could potentially save thousands of lives because it's slightly against the popular religion.

We start wars on hunches that end up costing us billions of dollars and thousands of lives, actively sensor the word "Shit" but not "ass-spelunker", and have a population base so poor that many people have to resort to buying their daily groceries at walmart - a store that employs starving people in third world countries to make thier goods because they can't find a cheaper way to do it yet.

      mmmm brains

marriage is the spiritual union between a man and a woman. Marriage is not about tax breaks, it is not about a legal union between 2 people that 'love' each other. Know what marriage is before you spread your uninformed opinion. Untill the 50s/60s, homosexuality was considered a mental disorder

      it's sad

Are you referring to embrionic stem cell research? In case you didn't realise, adult stem cells have sucessfully been used to help people, and the practice is morally acceptable. Embrionic stem cell research has done nothing so far but kill a bunch of yet-to-be-born children. Sure it seems promising, just like if you invest all of your money in my warp drive research, I might be able to figure it out and make your investment worth it.

welcome to the human race, stupidity is what we do best

I hate that, they edit out "ass hole" but leave in "you bitch".. how does that make sense.

and have a population base so poor that many people have to resort to buying their daily groceries at walmart - a store that employs starving people in third world countries to make thier goods because they can't find a cheaper way to do it yet.
If the big corps. had their way, we would all be their slaves.

So before you say this country sucks, take a look at how the rest of the world is doing.. won't look so bad after that.

This is oft-quoted nonsense. Embryonic research has had benefits, and would have more if it were allowed to be practiced. There's a lot of misinformation firing around about the research in general.

The bottom line, though, is that embryonic stem cells clearly have more potential for development. This isn't a case of something which might-or-might-not have benefits. "No real benefits" would be an extremely unlikely outcome.

Heh, it is about the benefits they're being denied by not being married. If it is only a title, do not grant married people certain rights that other legitimate lovers cannot access. Period. It is obvious, blatent discrimination otherwise.

Then why is it associated with the law? It is not the purpose of the law to determine what is spiritual and what is not.

This is not an uninformed opinion.

What I post is based on fact.

Which fact? How about the first ammendment that tells us that the law can't determine what is spiritual or not?

Don't you remember your "separation between church and state" lesson back in social studies class?

The law should not intervene with freedom of choosing a life partner.

When it does, it is discrimination.

It's illegal to refuse someone employment based on sexual orientation, so why is illegal to refuse marriage status?

If marriage is the "spiritual union..." then why do some states have "common law marriages" that join people that don't even declare themselves to even be in love?

As far as my opinion goes, if a married couple can get legal privileges, then any two people that work cooperatively within a living/financial situation should have access to those privileges. Anything else should be considered discrimination.

I'm in favor of changing the official legal term to "civil union" (for any two consenting adults) and let religious leaders worry about whether or not you are "married".

I'm completely in favour of that. Marriage shouldn't be a legal construct, it's pretty fraught with nonsense.

Surprisingly the same states that find some support for gay marriage, like California.

I think it's a general trend of recognition that marriage, as a legal term, doesn't have to mean what it means in terms of religion. In fact, it really shouldn't mean what it means in religion, because to create a law from religion is just silliness.

marriage is nothing more than an agreement between two people
to share their lives, responsibilities etc

                          there is nothing spiritual there.

                          it's some sort of contract.

remember that if you only have a church wedding it's not legal in most countries.

Well, that's the point. The legal construct of marriage gets too-often confused with the religious version.

I have to agree in some senses, but do you have any idea how many laws you'd have to strike to get compliance with that? You can argue atheist morality--but the judges, decision-making bodies, presidents, Congresses, legislatures, and whateverelses that made/interpreted virtually all the laws in the US have been religious to a vast majority, and that manifestly influenced them in their lawmaking.
