  • New Shoutcast server setup

Have installed and configured the latest ShoutCast server for Windows, plus Winamp 2.7.2, the Shoutcast DSP plug-in, Microsoft netshow tools, and the Shoutcast DJ plug-ins. I have a LAN with one WIN95 client, and the Shoutcast server and the WINamp broadcast are running together on another computer. I can listen to the broadcast via my LAN from my WIN95 client. I asked a friend to see if he could access my Shoutcast server to see if he could listen to my station. After inputting the same IP address and port as my WIN95 client, he received a timeout error when trying to access my server. Now, I have a 1.5M/384K DSL connection. The shoutcast server's ini was set to allow 14 clients at 24Kbps. There's "currently" no firewall or router between my LAN and my shoutcast server. He couldn't even ping the IP address of my shoutcast server, which I could from my WIN95 client. Got any ideas? Also, I can see from the Shoutcast Server GUI that I've logged into shoutcast's yp server, but I can't find my station name when I do a search for on shoutcast's website.

Please understand that I'm a Network Manager with 12 years experience, so I know what I'm saying in how my network is setup and that there's no firewall or any type of filtering being done that would keep a remote person from pinging my shoutcast server. I've been able to access the same server via PC Anywhere with no problem.

    Thanks

Since you have experience with networks I would assume that you chose the right IP (local vs. broadcast), right?

Yes, I'm using a local IP address, not the broadcast address for my network.

Hmmmmmmm, well I think your network has nothing to do with it. If the source is connecting and the music is getting to WinAmp and the DSP is connecting to the server no problem, then you should have no problems aside from being blocked, which a lot of ISP's are beginning to do. Try signing up at Live365 and doing "Live Broadcast"....Send your music stream to them and see if the user can connect. If they can, then I would suspect it's, yes I am going to say this, something wrong with your network or your ISP has blocked you. I'd look at the latter first and troubleshoot from there. Hope this Helps!

Thanks. I'll check with Pacbell to see if they're blocking streaming. That should take me a week or two just to get a coherent answer that makes sense. Any idea why I'm not showing up in Shoutcast's directory after my shoutcast server logs into their directory? Does my shoutcast server have to be "live" or streaming for a certain period of time before it shows up? Since I was testing and getting a feel for how this whole thing works, I was only streaming a couple of songs, and I did't have Winamp set to replay the songs in my playlist. That means there were plenty of times that I wasn't actually streaming, and the yp server kicked me out. I now know how to have winamp replay my playlist.

Ya, pretty much count on 5-10 minutes to show up. Please please please, make sure your Genre's are specified and SPELT properly...A lot of people don't spell them right and wonder why they won't show up. But 5-10 minutes is the golden rule, If you don't show up under your genre, do a search by your station name. If all else fails...Raise your hands to the sky and ask "Why, Why me????".....

If it's any help, I also use pacbell.net. I have enhanced DSL service. I am able to stream no problem.

Hey everyone I need your help evaluating my cable company's line. Basically I want to find out max upload for my streams off my cable modem. As of now, running a 128-bit stream, I was able to get 14 streams no problem. I know this seems like a gimmiky thing to make yo listen to my stream, but I'd be greatly appreciative, and as you probably noticed, I've become very active in the last 2 days alone, but I'm trying to gauge my limits. Anyway heres my stream info:

the reason I wanna do this is so that I can find out the max users I can support safely at this bitrate and assess whether I might need wedge or stream (hell or even that BNN dude) to take over my needs...

                        Thanks again,

                          Malloc,

I called Pacbell.net's support and determined that they don't filter or block streaming, so I have to look at something else. I have enhanced DSL as well. I'm going to try having my friend connect to my shoutcast server again. Maybe he used the wrong ip address for my server. That's the only thing that I can think of right now since he was able to ping my client, just not the server.

To the person who was hosting 14 128k streams off a cable modem...What!?!?
That doesn't seem to make any sense, how fast is a cable modem? I checked your stream and winamp rebuffered every 5 seconds.

Well, I doubt you could successfully host that many 128K streams on cable, but stranger things have happened. First, you need to determine how much upload bandwidth you actually have (dslreports.com has a bandwidth test that measures both downstream and upstream...it's good enough to get a rough idea). Then, when you have that figured out, try out this handy Bandwidth Calculator at ShoutClub. It'll figure out how many streams you can support at different bitrates.
