  • 128kbs/stereo = 256kbs

    i got a bit confused....
but streaming at 128kbs stereo does mean transfering 256kbs of data per stream?!?
    or doesn`t it?

    thanks in advance

      thanks for the reply!

but does not a stereo signal have two independent channels, therefor also needing twice the 128kbs of information per streams (=2*128=256), whereas a mono signal, with only on channel, would only need a stream of 128kbs data.

      thanks

        64 + 64 = 128

        hehe 64k + 64k = 128k

the advertised bitrate is the total bitrate.

A 128kbps will send out 128kbps no matter how many channels there are...however, usually it is the case that a 128kbps MONO stream is roughly twice the quality of a 128kbps STEREO stream.. While this may not seem to make sense, it is true and is related to the fact that the encoder can keep more (twice more) of the original source data in the case of encoding a MONO 128kbps as opposed to a STEREO 128kbps.

it is very evident with low bitrates, try listening to 32kbps MONO vs STEREO. You will notice much more artifacts in the STEREO version caused by the reasons above...

note that your mileage may vary, and the differences between 128kbps STEREO and MONO can really only be heard when your source is over 256kbps (or from live input)....
