  • Broadcast and Source have different bitrates. Effects?

Hey. What I'm wondering is, if for example the source mp3 being played is a V0 and it'll be broadcasted on 128kbps, whether or not there are transcoding artifacts.

Would it be preferrable for the source and the broadcast to have the same bitrate?

When you transcode a V0 to 128, there are supposed to be plenty of artifacts, effectively ruining the sound. Transcoding with lossy formats should never be done. Is this the same, here?

Thats an interesting question and I really like to know it too
But I assume it is double encoded then
and also: The Encoder is not the newest

    SC_Trans for example does use Lame MP3 0.400 !
But I dont know which Encoderversion the Shoutcast Source does use..

SHOUTcast always re-encodes, which will always include a quality loss. So the higher quality the source, the better. preferably lossless. Now if a specific encoding, like V0 would increase artifacts, I can't say for sure. But still stick with the higher quality of the source the better.

If it is how you say, then Higher Quality = Better isn't universally true. I read a post somewhere on an audiophiles forum which indicated that it really depends on the codec used, how old it is, and the bitrate only partially.

So from OGG to OGG there would be different artifacts than with MP3. But the conclusion was that MP3 screws up somewhere in this department even with high-quality lossy sources. I don't remember where though.

          Another Question:

When I have mp3s which have the same bitrate as the serversetting, does it re-encode then also?

The SHOUTcast dsp always re-encodes if im not
            mistaken.
