Many stations are not listened to by the shoutcast online radio directory and I don't really know why.

The most common reason these days is if you're trying to listen in Chrome browser via https://directory.shoutcast.com
Chrome won't play http streams over https
If using Chrome or Safari, use http://directory.shoutcast.com
