Personally, I also don't understand what legal issues are there with stream ripping. If there are legal issues, they have to be for just watching the stream, isn't that true? Until the stream is not DRM-ed, which can't be done with NSV as far as I know, stream ripping is no big deal, I mean technically. In order to rip the stream, it's not necessary to break any protection or something. Of course there can be bandwidth issues for the broadcaster, if many people are just hung at the server all the time and just leeching stuff, but this is probably not what we are talking about here.
So, can anyone explain what exactly are the legal issues with stream ripping?

This is not a flame-post, I'm just really curious about the explanation and I want to understand it :-)

You know, but we're not talking about moral issues here, we're talking about legal issues. And law is not about common sense and morality :-)

Also, if I was making music or vids and I would stream it through means of totally unprotected media, I would expect that people would rip it and save it, because there is no technical dificulty at all to do it, not even for the least advanced users. On the other hand, if we're talking specifically about videos streamed through shoutcast, it's always of way lower quality than original (until it's a few Mbit stream or so), so even by saving the stream people won't get the same as if they bought a DVD/VHS/whatever with that video, plus there are other difficulties with the saved stream, you still can't rewind it neither forward or back (it might be done, by maybe converting it back to mpg or indexing it somehow, but still, it's a technical difficulty which can't be done by average user who saves the stream), you can't save just a specific song/episode etc., unless you don't have very quick fingers, so you'd have to cut the video and again it can't be done directly with NSV... So I wouldn't worry even if I did stream my work through shoutcast. Also, the more people see my work, the more will eventually buy it if they'll like it. Those big numbers which the music and movie industry always claim about damages and loss are bullshit, because most of the people who watch/listen/download "illegal" music/movies, would never pay for it if they had to pay in order to have it. Actual damages to those companies are much lower than they claim.

The AOL corporate legal team recomended that the discussion of stream ripping should be forbidden.

Thats why it is not allowed at the winamp / shoutcast forums.

You would have to bring the matter up with them.
