  • Concerning Fonts

    Hey, it's me again!

I am working on a skin and need to use a particular font. The problem is, i may not include it into the *.wal, because of copyright and distribution issues.

As I only need the skin in two fontsizes (timer & ticker in normal- & shademode), my idea was doing a workaround and creating bitmapfonts. But it looks like winamp needs specifications on "charwidth", which results in very ugly spacing.

Is there a way to use the font in the skin and still be sure, that noone can extract it from the *.wal?

Can I use a bitmap font with variable "charwidht"?

    Thanks in advance!

where is the font from? cause if its only off a site and its free then go ahead and use it in ur skill...other option is to put a password of the folder that u are putting it into so that when u zip it its got a password lock on it.

Wouldn't that also bugger it up for Winamp to use?, if it can't open the folder that contains the font due to password protection, how is it going to be able to use the font in the skin?

Having dabbled around a year or so back trying to encrypt .wsz/.wal files so people couldn't get into them to rip off the images and so on, let me tell you it's more hassle than it's worth password protecting files in this way, a determined person would still get in anyhow.

It's not freeware, I know that.

But thanks for the idea with the password. Maybe that will work.

I've come across lots of copyrighted fonts in winamp skins and xp visual styles and i never heard of anyone being done for it. Rename it. No-one'll know!

passwords on zip files are easy to decode so thats not a perfect choice either
as Matt_69 said there are so many fonts out there and so many have different names but are the same font.
best to choose a general non copyrighted font imo, there are so many to choose from your spoilt for choice

Sorry, but I don't care, if other people just rename copyrighted fonts in their skins. I don't want to get myself into trouble just because such little skinning problems.

But searching a similar one is really a good alternative. Though it will it probably take some time...

Does anyone know / have a "Gill Sans DisplayBold"-similar font?

Gill Sans Display is a humanist san-serif so if you like that style try searching for other fonts in the category.

AFAIK, you can't. The best you can do is to make sure that the characters in your bitmapfont is centered so as for it to not look too off-spaced. That is if you decide to go with bitmapfonts
