I don't use sich a skin myself (sorry), but while researching / collecting skins baxk in october, I found a few. Looked nice. One was gray/green. Can look up the names for you if need be.
But what is the appeal / function / value of the speaker panes? Do they do something, other than move with beat?

Yes, some of them. I have used Winamp Media Tower, Sony Media Tower and Retrotech Technics before. I may have also used the others since I'm a big fan of skins with animated speakers, but I don't recognize the names. I will take a look at them asap, thank you.
I keep copies of the skin archive files I try, unless I really don't like them or they are very similar to other skins in my collection.

The same goes for me. I have in total 44 skins (my hdd failed )
Sorry to hear that. I have lost files in the remote past. It's strange, but now that I regularly make backups (stored on portable drives), I hadn't had to use them.
I mostly use modern skins. I'm not sure of the total count in my current collection (classic & modern). The last time I checked it was getting close to 100. This includes various versions of the same skin. Sometimes I like a previous version better than the current version.

Non-animated speakers are a waste of screen space, imho.
Keep working on it. You will get there eventually. Send forum member ariszlo a pm (personal message). He has successfully updated several old skins and may be able to help or suggest where you can find some. Forum member Victhor is a graphic artist and skinner. He may be able to help with how the speakers look.
I'm not a skinner, but (for my own use) I've managed to successfully add the speaker files from JVC Tape (with some minor mods) to some of my modern skins that didn't have animated speakers.
I should also state that I'm now using WACUP (a Winamp clone that is actively being developed) on a regular basis. I still use Winamp for the few things WACUP is currently not able to do.

@SudenKapala
The appeal is the speakers are animated. What are the skins you found?
I had to check most of my skins collection -- I rarely use anything else than my default.
The ones with speakers (only two!) are these:
Pad (code by iPlaythespoons, graph by RyanFuller, RLF) &
wAmp Media Tower (WMD Tibi Ardelean 1v1; I saw that Realm mentioned this one).
I found them last year after october.
now that I regularly make backups (stored on portable drives), I hadn't had to use them.
I've trying to get a decent, structural backup system to work for decades now, but my data and my disk config are so 'dynamic' (read: chaotic) that it keeps lagging behind. Part of my problem is that I want 2 backups -- one is very vulnerable while in the process of making a single backup (because the previous backup is being overwritten). Still, I don't trust any hardware anymore. I make backups (very) regularly... and need them. Regularly.
