  • i don't get it

the latest posts on this forum were just last month. 40 people are viewing it right now. People complain about AVS being unstable but i haven't had problems in years. Music isn't going to disappear, winamp is still available to download, sites like customize.org exist and wordpress if you're unsatisified... what's the issue? Why are people complaining?

I'm of the opinion that old veterans, who stop using avs for personal reasons, see themselves and their friends growing out of it and decide that it's passed on... totally discounting all the things i just mentioned above.

Tugummi made a thread called "rip winamp." In it, he stated that AVS was dead, winamp was buried, the forums would be wiped.... two years on, and it seems fine to me.

    Just a thought:
maybe the only reason people think avs is dead is because old hats keep making journals and blog posts claiming that it is.

Make stuff for fun. If you disown yourself from a community only because the population is low, you left for the wrong reason, man.

The lack of replies in this thread should be a very strong message for you.

AVS IS dead, period. It hasn't been upgraded in years and is extremely slow to work with. For the reasons I mentioned, the so-called veterans left and no one has uploaded a preset in a very long time. It's understandable, people move on with their lives, I don't use AVS anymore because I simply grow tired of it.

dreadofmondays, I felt like you do for years. Do you remember the Winamp Forums Compilations? WFC1 started because we felt AVS was dying and we needed some group activity to keep us together. This was 10 years ago.

A few reasons why people don't make packs any more:
      > AVS 2.81d and 2.82 are incompatible and they're both regarded as latest, your OS version decides which version is installed. This would either split my audience in half or double my work.
      > Addons are removed from winamp.com. Sure, there's deviantart and other sites, but most people don't know those sites. Traditionally, winamp had - by far - the highest download amounts, other sites were better for artists among each other - commenting and such.
      > The regulars stopped talking here, as there is nothing to discuss any more.
      > Life went on for most artists. When I started, I was 16 and had all day to work on an AVS preset. I'm 31 now and am happy to get a few hours at the end of the day.

If I would spend my time on a new pack, I'm not sure if there would be over a hundred downloads worldwide and maybe 10 of those would actually use them. I don't think that's worth it.

I feel like I'm being told off for daring to suggest people still use the software. It's not dead, dude. Anyone can grab it and use it. Why the hostility?

That's your decision, though. It speaks for veterans. It doesn't speak for others. Again, seems like only the veterans are considered to be the 'real' community members...

In 2002 I was seven years old. I missed out on being a part of this community for no fault of my own. I'd still like to be to create cool stuff and share it with people who appreciate it, and I really enjoy AVS and what it represents so I'll be trying to make stuff with it for as long as it's available. I'd appreciate it if that decision wasn't treated with scorn. "Look at this guy. Look at him trying to play with a program we've grown tired of. What an asshole." I really really dislike that attitude, and I see it all throughout this forum. "RIP Winamp. Because I said so."

Radionomy have already given the impression that they care about winamp. The vis software is still out there, and people can pick it up play with it, and as long as that's true I'm going to be messing around with it and hoping that people become interested. The fact that you are tired of it is completely irrelevant and to use that as a reason to condemn avs is very selfish.

Okay then, have you seen a pack released somewhere?

I'm not hostile whatsoever, the way you are approaching this discussion is.

There are posts around here and from other sites such as dA (it used to be the major platform to post our work before dA screwed everything up) from various artists that just claim what I said. How does that make me selfish? The fact that no new improvements have been applied to a buggy tool like AVS makes it a chore to work with, it's no rocket science really.
Other than that I really don't know what to tell you, other that if you want to contribue, just post your work and stop whining about AVS' current state.

Like you see happen, there is discussion now. People who care about AVS are still here. If we were hostile towards AVS, we would have left and not replied to your post. There is just hardly anything worth discussing anymore. People didn't 'leave', most are still here on occasion, they just stopped posting.
