  • Asking about permission to use presets in a project I'm sending to a short film compo

    Hello!

I've come here to ask about using MilkDrop visuals in my project that I'm intending to send to a casual short film competition.

So, I've been working on this series called "FIDSGETS SPINNERS' CLUB" that started off with me goofing around with a fidget spinner in front of my greenscreen and adding MilkDrop visuals to the background. Untill it accidentally grew into a story with alternative fidget realm and the fidgets being some kind of ancient entities and stuff.

Now I'm working on the 5th and final episode of this saga and I'm thinking about attending to a short film compo in Summer Assembly 2018 that is a big LAN-party event here in Finland and maybe sending it to some other places that feature amateur short films aswell. In the Assembly there is some kind of prize I'm not sure what. Probably a piece of hardware for PC or something. Assembly is quite pedantic with copyrights so I really wanted to present my project here and ask about permissions. I love the work people have done with the presets and this series is my tribute to MilkDrop in a way.

What I've gathered by reading threads is that generally people are okay with using their presets in projects. Of course mine has some kind of prize to it but it's not really my biggest interest here. I'm mostly in it to see this series on a huge screen. And to bring this content to people that might appreciate it the most.
I recently downloaded the 'favourite presets.zip' from http://www.geisswerks.com/about_milkdrop.html and found some very suitable and amazing presets there.

Would it be enough if I put the name of each preset next to the visual as they appear or in a similar kind of way but in the end credits?
    And some link/info about MilkDrop.

In the past I haven't been that considerate about the copyrights but I'm thinking about getting more serious with my content on youtube. When I have the time I'll find the names of presets I've used in the past episodes and adding them to the description credits.

Of course if someone wants directly to grant me access to their works of art to be (maybe) used in this project... that would be cool!

Playlist to the episodes (they are in Finnish but I've added subtitles in english):

I would be honored if you used Acid Manda v3c in your project . I should be releasing v3c shortly after making this post .

Most people seem to pass by my preset though, or at least it isn't very popular. I'm not sure why other than people are getting tired of the series it just doesn't make the cut for some reason. The Star Forge series has been out and in development for about two years now, and I can definitely see that a lot of my earlier work leaves one wanting, so hopefully after all this time I have something to show for it in the latest Acid Mandala release. I think at the least it reacts to the energy of the music like no other preset, so its fun to watch and look almost totally different among various pieces of music.

Cheers and good luck with your project .

Edit: Oh my lucky stars, this time my post with the preset won't be visible until tomorrow because its in the moderation queue . There seems to be no rhyme or reason to why this sometimes happens and other times the post (yes, with an attachment) goes right through. What do I do for the special attention?
Creativity turned into madness. And then back again.

When I first had a peak at the preset code, it brought back memories of my days in the Clipper programmer's community where we shared ideas via bulletin boards (pre-Internet) and traveled to user group trade shows - commicon for business code programmers.

Milkdrop presets have always been regular text files and looking at them usually gives me a headache and a reminder why I stopped writing code almost 20 years ago. As a fellow ex-programmer, I highly respect those few individuals who broke the artistic MilkDrop ice and mastered the control mechanism of a brilliant plug-in that came with a free music player and they did it all without the expectation of money or fame. Some people would call that dumb brilliance. I call it music loving programmer/artists who had great curiosity and a desire to conquer a language that brought together two of their burning interests, music and computer programming.

Giving them a thank you in the credits of a video is the least we can do.

Hey, just wanted to give you guys a little update.
My friend finished with making the score music for the project and for the past few days I've been adding your visuals to the project and I have to say HOLY SHIT THIS LOOKS AMAZING Can't wait to share it with you. My other friend is making soundeffects atm.
At the end of the next week will be the Assembly Summer 2018. I have to cut the 8m45s piece into 5min to fit the compo guidelines but it works pretty nicely anyway. And later the uncut version will be in the Red Carpet Film Festival in my hometown Hyvinkää, Finland on 2nd of September. After that I can publish it on my YouTube channel
