Is it supposed to change render types on its own?

Monkey occasionally will just change render format, as though "R" has been pressed, even when I'm not actually touching keys. Is it supposed to do this on its own? If it's a feature of reaction to the music...well, it just doesn't suit me I guess.
Plus, enabling the wireframe bogs down the framerates.
