  • Am I completely stupid? Please confirm.

I don't claim to be any sort of "expert" when it comes to computers. But I like to think that I know enough. Or at least that is what I used to think until I started browsing the Plugins section of the WinAMP website.

Here is my problem. I cant figure out how to make the plug ins use my 3D Card! I have looked through the settings but I am not getting anywhere!

Can any of you help me? I have downloaded Smoke (At last! The page didn't display for about three days!) and I have installed it. On the website it says that you need:

A video card with simple 3D support (I have a Rage II with 3D Support)
DirectX 7.0a or later (I have DirectX 8)
Winamp 2.72 or later (I have Version 2.78)
Windows 98/ME/2000/etc. (I have Windows 98 Second Edition)
Recommended: 800+ MHz processor (the faster, the better!) ( I have a Celeron 400!)
Recommended: Any old 3D graphics card will do; fancy cards won't gain you much. (I have an old 3DFX Voodoo 2 Card.)

I admit that my system may be crap compared to most people who use winamp but it's always been fast enough for everything else! I can play most games without a hitch, and it does everything else so well - I just don't know why this doesn't work.

When I run smoke in full screen (any resolution) I get a Black screen with some swirly white lines on it. In a window I get a jumble of graphics that don't make any sense - nothing like the screenshots!

HELP Please I am going out of my mind with frustration.

not sure what your problem is but I will try and help can you:

post a copy of the debug file. In winamp slect plugins --> Smoke --> Config Plugin --> tick in Misc option genergate debug file. Then post the file which is C:\s_debug.txt to the forums. This my help. I know a little about what goes off in this file but if I cannot help someone will.

Download Milkdrop. this is another of geiss' plugins and it seems that generally problems with one are problems with both. If you get a problem with this then post the debug file (saying what the problem is) here or preferably to the MilkDrop forums (81-84).
(more info might make us solve the problem quicker)

The reason why you could not download is that winamp.com get all screwed up it seems for a couple of days when any new versions come out.

What graphics card do you have?I am unsure from your post (ATI Rage II or Voodoo)

Voodoo cards have a problem with there driver under certain OS's possible solution in the Milkdrop readme.

I will probably only have a look in the new year though but post here and me or someone will get back to you.

Hope I helped. Let us know.

    Cheers,

To start with Smoke should work see you are not (necessarily) stupid .

also Smoke appears in the winamp plugin window so that implies you have a 3d card and direct x installed.

Voodoo cards have a problem with there driver under certain OS's possible solution in the Milkdrop readme. Something I think about reinstalling orginal drivers and/or directx. Cannot remember

Thanks for replying. I will address each of your points in order.

        1. I might not be stupid - that's good!
        2. I do have the latest version of Direct X and a 3D card.
        3. My problem is that I can't make any plugin use my 3D card.
        4. File Posted.
        5. Downloaded Milkdrop. Same problem. File Posted in the next post.
        6. That's explains a lot.
        7. I have an ATI Rage IIC and a Voodoo 2 3DFX Accelerator.
        8. This problem relates to Win 2K and Voodoo 3. I have Win 98 and Voodoo 2.
        9. You did help - thanks.

I hope that made sense - you will have to read the previous post in bits but it should become clear if you take it one sentence at a time.

        Nick.

Sorry could ffind the problem with my limited knowledge of the debug files.

If I find anything I will let you know.
