  • Crash on completion of rip to an invalid folder

Alright so I was trying to rip cds to FLAC files. I tried using the following destination folder:
    C:\Users\No Bic\Music\<Artist> - <Album>
On completion of the first track, Winamp would crash for any of several reasons:
    • Folder Path Invalid
    • Folder "<Artist> - <Album>" didn't exists
    • It simply couldn't write the file to the folder with the proper variables

But yea, it would crash. I changed the path without using variables and it is now set to a folder that exists. Tried with 2 different dvd-roms (1 external, 1 internal)

    Specs:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Intel Core 2 Quad q6600
    4GB RAM

Yea i tried ripping another CD to a different folder.
It crashes if the folder does not exist.

    Can anybody reproduce this bug?

are you running win7 in admin mode?

      full dest path?

      C:\Users\MrSinatra\Music

      what is the full string?

      <Artist> - <Album>\## - <Trackartist> - <Title>

thanks for that. that fixes the problem i was having.
however, winamp still crashes if there's an invalid folder in the destination path.
And yes, I am using Win 7 in admin mode.

          which part fixed it?

using win7 in admin mode is not necessarily the same as running an app, like winamp, in admin mode. i don't know all the details, but vista/win7 are real pains in the ass about granting apps filewriting permission, occassonally regardless of user profile mode. i always set my music apps to run in admin mode via their shortcuts, in several areas in the shortcut. pita.

the script lines in my previous post are the default values in winamp. i don't rip with it actually, i use EAC. i would not be surprised at any app crashing if a dest.folder was invalid, although i suppose you could expect better error handling.

mp3tag is good with FLACs btw, make sure you don't have id3 tags in them!

We'll be fixing it so you can't manually type in an invalid path into the Destination Folder field.

Maybe if you type in something, we could prompt the user if they want the folder to be created if it doesn't exist,
or give an error message if the folder can't be created due to having invalid characters, as in No Bic's example.

            Folder names can't contain < > characters.
The "<Artist> - <Album>" etc syntax is for the Naming Convention field only.

Well I ran Winamp as administrator and that seemed to stop winamp from crashing when ripping to a non-existing folder.

I was getting the same problem, it would crash at about 90% of the last song.

It started after i re-formatted my C (with Windows 7) and i was trying to rip to another hard drive.

I found out that it was Windows permissions,
to solve it i had to grant my user ownership and permission to the drive that i was ripping to.
And now it works fine, it also fixed a few other issues i was having.

is that b/c windows then allowed winamp to just go ahead and create those folders?

ah yes, very annoying. there are threads here in the forums about taking ownership, and then setting the permissions. real PITA stuff. i find this useful for taking ownership:

just add that to your registry by double clicking it and its in the context menu.
