  • BUG: file info window not showing rating

    win7
    5.601 Bento

came across a small but weird issue and figured it should be documented, prob a simple fix for you to do anyway:

i downloaded a mp3 from a website, cleaned up the tags and rated it, however it was never entered or scanned into the ML, (i don't auto-add to the ML afaik). then today i moved it with windows explorer, and double clicked to play it. played fine, tags were still updated, but now i was noticing that the rating did not show in the file info window in the top center of Bento, to the direct right of the player controls.

i double checked with mp3tag and the winamp written rating IS in the file.

i'm not sure that it matters i moved the file, i suspect it still wouldn't have worked even if i hadn't moved it. but no matter what i do, short of scanning it into the ML, it won't show in winamps file info window. (it does show in win7 win-explorer btw)

so my conclusion is that the winamp file info window only displays the ratings of files who have their ratings stored in the ML DB, and not files who have it only in the tag, and NOT the ML DB.

i consider that a 'bug' at least in the sense that its undesired behavior. winamps "file info" window should display the content of the files tags, and not need to refer to the ML DB, imo.

    thoughts?

actually, moving the file around does seem to be the key, moreso than open/restarting winamp. its crazy but the rating will show only if its the dir i rated it in, or so it seems...

i just figured out something else, that prob should be in its own thread, but its similar or at least related to this...

if you have "add played files to ML" UNchecked, as i do, winamp will nevertheless ADD a played file to the ML, IF you rate it.

i was just about to post this bug again, b/c i forgot i had posted it before, and just ran into it again.

i can now say for certain that opening/closing winamp doesn't matter. this part:

its crazy but the rating will show only if its the dir i rated it in

previous post appears to be spam or something.

            ok, so testing a 5.64beta:

the only difference between what i wrote above, and now, is that when you move the file, and then play it, the rating DOES now show up in the file info window, even though the file, in its new location, is not in the ML DB. i consider that a good thing.

so my question is does winamp parse ALL files that don't have a rating in the ML DB, to check for a rating?

or, does winamp only parse those files NOT in the ML DB at all?

fyi: winamp will still add a file to the DB just by virtue of rating the file, even if you have the option to add played files to the ML unchecked.

Is that version number a typo or a limited access version for testing? If it is the latter, can I get a copy and any associated change log?

Basically, when ratings were first implemented in Winamp 5.0x, it was done as part of ml_local, using nde (Nullsoft Database Engine), thus making it a Local Media Library database feature.

Files had to be in the mldb for ratings to be stored/recognized.
This is why files were auto added to the mldb when rated.

Since we now support ratings in tags (POPM, etc) for mp3, ogg, flac, wma (did we ever get mp4/m4a working?),
as from the next release, Winamp will be able to read the rating from the tags, even when the file is not in the mldb, and display it in e.g. the Rating context menu in the main window, the Rate Items context menu in the Playlist Editor, and in the Bento mcv / file info area.

that was MY mistake. i should not have said i had that, and i apologize for doing so. it was an honest mistake, (i didn't know not to), but a mistake all the same.

in any case, i get the feeling you won't have to wait long, but i have no inside info on an ETA, just my guess.

ah, makes sense i guess, although i think ratings in files should have been supported first, but perhaps the id3v2.3 spec didn't predate the feature in the app?

regardless, it probably needs to stay that way, for those who don't store ratings in tags, or formats that don't support them.

NO! i would be THRILLED if you would add the %rate% atom to the mp4/m4a format with a range of 0-100 (copying your vorbis scheme) since this appears to be the current popular de facto standard.

yes, thats awesome. i think DrO told me winamp will now parse all played files for a rating if no rating is present in the DB, regardless of if the song is or isn't in the DB. i think that makes the most sense.
