  • big high res artwork doesn't show

i'm pretty sure this has already been posted, but jic i have a Folder.jpg that doesn't show in winamp. its only 640x640, but a meg in size, so i'm guessing high res.

not a big deal, but i would like to know what the hard limits are.

tried to upload, but forum won't allow it.

There is probably something unusual with that picture, but I don't know enough about image files to pinpoint why it won't display in Winamp.
I'm pretty sure it's not because of its size.
I can display another folder.jpg that is 74 MB (25,700 x 20,400): 82 MB causes my Winamp to crash. (I had Auto Restart enabled, so that was exciting for a minute!)
I guess the maximum size is somewhere in between.

It displayed OK in any image viewer I tried.
ImageMagick can resize it, but Photo Resizer can't.
There are all sorts of image processors: I suspect the good ones will handle it and the weaker ones won't.

It is displayed oddly in Mp3tag when embedded in a MP3 or FLAC and will not display in Winamp.
If most of its metadata is stripped, it displays normally in Mp3tag but still won't display in Winamp, either embedded or not.

Seems like another rare, oddball case that Winamp is not robust enough to handle.
It's easy to fix by opening it with Paint and saving it as a JPG.

interesting to know that winamp can display a 70meg+ Folder art! i would never have thought that the case.

so the issue does seem that there is something funky about this art, but if windows explorer and mp3tag can use it, even if its poorly, seems like a failure on winamps part.

it would be interesting to find out why this file borks winamp, it does seem unusual.

          just found another one:

works in windows explorer, is weird in a corner on mp3tag, and doesn't work in winamp at all.

any ideas? can u fix it?

Both files are easy to fix: open them with Paint (which is still native to Windows) and resave as JPG.

Both problem files have Adobe tags. Not every image file does.
I have been told that when they exist, they are necessary to display the file properly.

After resaving both files with Paint, the Adobe tags were gone and the images displayed properly in Winamp.
My theory is that Paint (and other apps) can use the Adobe tags to "develop" the image but then incorporate the information directly in the image when saving/printing them and the Adobe tags are no longer required.

When I removed them with Exiftool, the image still displayed in File Explorer, but not correctly.
I thought that maybe Winamp was choking on the Adobe tags and would would display something, even if it was borked, when they were gone but that didn't happen.

I'm out of my depth and out of ideas.

u did the important thing, in identifying the fix and possible causes. i had already found an alternative for the first one, but i searched a long time for the best looney tunes one and didn't have an easy alternative there, so thx.

              bizarre issues.
