Works great for me gaekwad, on this old Win95 box I'm using.

Matter of fact I prefer and use DirectSound instead of waveOut since the Winamp volume control is independent of the system volume, whereas it is not using waveOut.

AFAIK DirectSound requires DirectX 8.0 or higher. So those with older version of Windows would have to update DirectX.

        @Nunzio
Out of curiosity, which is your version of DirectX?

8.0 of course, JM. Win95 can not use anything higher AFAIK.

I figured the max might be 8.0 or 8.1. However, my Win95 machine is a oversized paper weight and dust collector, so I wasn’t sure.

                why brother 'upgrading'?

The so called new version would only take away features
                /introduce bugs

Maybe Winamp 5.09 change log would looked like
                - User must use the 'AOL the great output plugin', or you'd get error playing all media file
                - user friendly spyware added
                - winamp logo updated (to AOL's one)
                - etc...
and hay, let's not forgot the most important update that has been exist for long time:
                - Lots lots lots lots Critical Security bug fixes
                - Lots lots lots lots of small bugfixes
Listen smart ass, if you don't like Winamp, which remains the best and most flexible MP3 and video player in my opinion, fine.

But don't come in here bashing or you'll be bashed yourself. I don't know what the hell you are using for your media files and I don't care. Winamp is excellent and is still very heavely used by system admins and advanced users everywhere because of its great flexibility and the thousands of plug-ins and skins available everywhere.

But I don't know. Maybe you're using that foobar and you think it's better, or maybe you're with those Microsoft bitches or Apple and you're using WMP or iTunes.

Just go jerk off and shut up if you don't like the amp.

And for the final word on unicode with Winamp, look at what billyvnilly linked to above, prior to your post.

                        Clarify this someone please

Wait - would someone confirm/clarify this:

Upgrade to Winamp 5.08e and it is now impossible to do anything to a wma file except play it straight through DirectSound?

                        Is that right?

So no ASIO output, no DSPs, no equaliser on wma files???

Also, does this impact on ALL wmas in 5.08e, or just on DRM-protected wmas?

I have no interest at all in any of the copy/AOL/piracy/zzzz issues, I'm just someone who likes listening to my music in great quality (for me, via ASIO).

Actually for this reason I don't even have a single DRM wma, and very few wma files. I guess I represent the mainstream who don't give a #### about the politics but just want to know if upgrading to 5.08e is going to restrict my options for handling/playing what wma files I do have. Thanks

                          AFAIK it goes like this.

Winamp 5.08d - Will not play protected WMA (unprotected should still be fine) but will use any output plugin.

Winamp 5.08e - Will play any WMA file/stream (protected or not) but only with the DirectSound plugin.

If you have no protected DRM files then stick with 5.08d. It could be worth saving the in_wm.dll file somewhere safe for use with future updates.

Yes and it does impact on all wmas.

But you can keep your present versions of in_wm.dll and wmahelp.dll (by either backing them up or remembering to uncheck wma every time you upgrade Winamp) and use them to play uncrippled wma files, or add WMA to the DirectShow extension list.

Wasn't all this already explained in full detail back on page 1 of this thread?

Anyway, expect a 5.08e to 5.08d downgrade installer package coming from DrO shortly. This will replace in_wm.dll, wmahelp.dll, and out_ds.dll with the versions from 5.08d - for all users who upgraded to 5.08e but didn't have any drm-protected wma files, and therefore didn't need to upgrade in the first place, as already explained on page 1 of this thread :/

Thanks ujay and gaekwad2, that was really helpful. It was kind-of-explained previous to this but not explicitly for non-DRM files so I wanted to make totally sure on that. I'll keep back the relevant 5.08d dlls like you suggest. Otherwise if I was playing my whole collection on random with out_asio I'd get stoppages everytime I hit a wma file Thanks again
