  • Short Review: Gracenotes' Playlist Generator vs. Predixis Music Magic (MusicIP)

Now, I am an avid user of the old winamp with Predixis Music Magic and was not happy to see it removed! Why: It used to do what it says: find songs in your library which u probably never heard of, perfect for exploring what you have on your harddisk.

Now that the new Winamp came out, with a host of cool features, i tried to give it a shot to try the new playlist generator from Gracenote, which should do just the same thing as predixis.

So what i did is first of all scannning the my library, worked well, and a lot faster than predixis.

Now, i did a look at how the mixer performs. Mainly, this was always the best thing about predixis: It really does find similar songs, and every mix is different....

The interesting thing was: in the case of the song 'She is my sin' from Nightwish, Playlist Generator only found no more than 12 songs (out of my library of 5000 songs)and no matter how often i generated a new playlist, it was always the same list.

From a subjective point also, the playlist generated with predixis where better fit and more similar to the original track, and whenever i press the 'mix' button on predixis there is a slightly different mix. Also the plugin seems to 'learn'...its suggestion become more accurate to my tastes the more i use it. Im not affiliated, in no way, but it -not always but most of the time- does what it says, though its performance on unpupolar music could be better at times, for example, it didnt, in the ase of Nightwish, suggest one song from iron maiden, which is also in my library, and is in fact in many ways similar. Also it can only do a list of 20 songs at one time.

    CONCLUSION

Until now, i think Predixis' MusicIP technology is more refined, and works better than Gracenotes.I ll need to review it more to see how it does on other tracks, but Gracenote just didnt hit the line with the first track i used it with.

I'll stick with Predixis for the time beeing, but happily look forward to a more evolved playlist generator.

Nice review, thanks! Note that the current version of the plugin is 1.2, available from the MusicIP home page, and now makes playlists of up to 75 tracks (and includes a few more options for tweaking playlists).

    (Disclaimer: I work for MusicIP)

I agree with everything you've said - who wants to hear the same playlist every time for one song!?

I'll stick with MusicIP, I just wish there was some way to get the button back in Bento instead of going to "Send To"

Hmm, I can't reproduce that problem here.

I've got mine configured to make lists of 100, and sure, maybe there's some tracks repeated in the list, but a high percentage of the list is different every time.

Then again, I am using the vastly improved 5.51 internal beta version ;-)

fraorlando, thanks for the review, but you forgot to review one point:

MusicIP can only process a limited number of formats (mp3 and maybe a couple of others, but *not* musepack for instance). This is a PITA for people like me who have a very low ratio of MP3s in their library.

I'd like to hear if Winamp's Playlist Generator can process any file that's readable by Winamp (even with 3rd party plugins).

afaik, it uses the same transcoding api. so as long as the plugin is up to date to latest winamp api specs (not all include the transcoding api support used by transcoder/burner etc). musepack i think has a plugin that works with the transcoder and should do fine.

                  Gracenote and MusicIP?

The short review and all comments here were very interesting. I'll keep MusicIP too, but I'll be happy to try Gracenote's thing when the currect beta gets to a release.

What I'd like to know... can you have both plug-ins installed in Winamp at the same time? I'm still using 5.35 with ml_xpdxs.dll saved from a backup (which is the MusicIP plug-in itself, while its data resides in the "Predixis MusicMagic" subfolder). Maybe it still works like before, when the installer deleted ml_xpdxs.dll and what you had to do was to restore the file?

No, I don't think it can. On the contrary, some certain songs from my library that I don't really like, seem to be used by MusicIP exceedingly more often than others. Maybe it predicts your taste, but not mine.
Sometimes I remove the songs from the playlist before playing, or I abort them when playing. If the MusicIP plug-in could "see" those actions, it actually could learn about my taste, but AFAIK it does not do any personalization.

I'm not quite sure if MusicIP would factor the rating in, that you can set for each track in Winamp's Media Library, but I'm not so enthusiastic for setting the rating of a few thousand songs anyway.

My problem too. And this is a problem I find. It would be real nice if the MusicIP plugin could accept from me somehow a indicator that I don't ever want song X mixed in again ... or learn if I remove it from a mix (more subtle but not necessarily better).

The problem though is broader. Firstly I have songs I probably don't ever want mixed in, full stop. Secondly I have songs I might be happy to mix into one set but not another ... it depends on the mood. That may be too hard a problem to solve meaningfully. But at least it would be grand if some songs could be tagged as mix-prohibited.

Yes, a good idea. Though I'd prefer an automatic function: The sooner a track is skipped, the more malus points it should get, and more malus points added when skipped again. The more malus points a track has, the more unlikely it should be played.

That's my idea. But probably we can reach the makers of MusicIP Mix more likely at their forum! Since it isn't supported by Winamp/AOL any more.

From a qualitative point of view, I think MusicIP makes the better playlist. Gracenote is okay, but it misses the appropriate mood for a playlist quite often. Maybe if you only listen to pop it will do fine, but if listen to music considered niche - it does not do as well as MusicIP. I will still use both to get some variety in the playlist, but I'm using MusicIP more often.

                            Music IP

I have found that no matter what i do, Gracenote's playlist generator does not work on my vista system. However as soon as I tried Music IP it worked just fine. In my opinion it is the only way to go.

In my mind, the Gracenote add-on is buggy at best and you should stay away from it. I think Winamp has made some attempts to fix it, but I've never been able to use it reliably. Excellent idea in concept but terrible in terms of reliability.
