In another forum, heavily devoted to Gecko browsers, a friend of mine has begun to write about a new Firefox based music player called Songbird. Does anyone know anything about it?
I know that it is not part of or related to Winamp. I just wondered what anyone knewabout it. With my Winamp Pro installations, I am not really looking for another player.
But I did install it to look at it. When I launched an internet stream, Songbird launched Winamp to play it.

IT was probably a configuration issue.
Firefox does that by default. They probably need to change some things to open the streams in Songbird.
Songbird properly opened several streams, .mp3 streams direct from the streamers' web sites. It would not open any .asx (WMP file type) or any .mp3 from Shoutcast, presented as a .pls file.
I just do not understand what they think they are doing. Their Mozilla/Gecko philosophy was fine to compete with IE6 and Outlook Express, where development was inert. But Winamp, and, I dare say, Real Player, are not of the same ilk. Winamp development is constant and terrific. Real Audio just released the final product for Real Player 11, and it is solid as a rock.
So, I just don't see where these folks at Songbird think they are going to go.
I am not comparing Songbird to Winamp or Real. I am saying that with what Winamp and Real have accomplished, and with the fact that they are constantly being developed, I don't see that Songbird has a good target market like FF and TBird.
