As for the progress, DrO is currently very busy with own things, and I cba to do as much stuff for the documentation, like I probably should do.

I cannot say, when the next build will be published, but one thing I can say for sure, it will contain a finished docu file and UAC improvements.

Winamp Backup Tool v1.0 Beta 11.1 available

1.0 Beta 11.1:

- added backup and restoration of 'Enhancer' DSP Plugin Skins
- added backup and restoration of 'Enhancer' DSP Plugin Presets*
- added backup and restoration of 'Nullsoft Signal Processing Studio' DSP Plugin Presets
- added backup and restoration of 'Toaster' Plugin Skins
- added backup and restoration of 'Toaster' Plugin Settings

* DrO's Enhancer Wrapper isn't a day old and Backup Tool cares about it, this is fast, huh?

The main reason for this unplanned release was, that I was disapointed, that I simply forgot to add Nullsoft DSP SPS presets and Enhancer skins.

The release was taken from our branch, it's independent from the major changes, which are planned/worked on for the UAC issues. Again the next bigger build will be released when it's done.

"forbidden chars" message attempting to backup to mapped drives

I am a new user (using beta 11.1 on Windows 7 32 bit, UAC turned off) trying out the backup. On my first attempt to backup I got the error "Warning: path is invalid. Reason: it contains forbidden chars". I was trying to backup to what seemed the most logical place to me, a drive mapped to my NAS mirror. No errors if I choose a physically attached drive but any drive mapping fails with this error. I did not see any mention of this when I searched the thread.

I tried several different ones including:
M:\WinampBackup
M:\fubar
M:\test
N:\temp

These are all valid paths (in most cases I created the folder while browsing from the backup tool).

All of those paths I listed gave the error. So, they ARE valid paths for Windows but the backup tool says they contain invalid characters. When I simply changed the drive letter to C: or E: (a USB attached drive) it worked fine.

No complaints; I appreciate the efforts to provide a backup solution. I was a bit surprised that it considers a mapped drive "forbidden" and wanted to let people know that is what happens...

Johnfv: Pawel thanksfully looked at the issue and this build hopefully should fix your issues.

Maybe the ability to backup/restore the pro reg infos should prevent people from losing their key, hehe.

I've attached Revision 3 of the English language file. So translators are able to localize it.

From now on, all changes for 1.0 will be code changes, which don't require any GUI change. We only fix typos in the English language file (if we still find some).

Further informations about the localization of the documentation file and the plugin will follow later.

Yet another 11.x release will follow within the next days.

Again a couple of minor fixes and tweaks. I thought we could focus all on the UAC issues and the docu file only now. I haven't planned to work on the branch as intensive as I did over the last days, but things never happen like you'd expect them, hehe.

Is this tool for moving my winamp setup to an external HD?

Somewhat naive user here, so I just want to be crystal clear about what this tool should be used for.

I have run out of space on my PC for any more Winamp files (or any files, for that matter). I would like to move my entire Media Library to a portable hard disk, and then keep adding to it. I also would like to take the HD with me when I travel and use it with my laptop PC.

I would be happy to learn more about Winamp config files, etc, so please just point me in the right direction!

The main aim of the tool is to provide a backup function for all configuration files, media library database, skins etc. A lot of people have corrupted setting files or lost their settings and ratings, so the ability to create backups and restore all things later when needed, was one of the most wanted features.

You can also use the tool to port your winamp installation from one system to another. But if you move you entire music files, you must change the path(s) under Preferences > Media Library > Local Media > Watch Folders. It's impossible for any tool, to autodetect, where you have moved your music files to.

Independent of the tool, when you want to store your files on an external HDD, you better should use 'Nullsoft Portable Media Player support' and 'Nullsoft USB device support'. The file letter for external drives can change dynamically, when your reconnect your drive, while the USB plugin saves all settings directly on the drive.

Conceptually, I understand the issues.

In the Forum, Post All Winamp 5.581 Official Plugin Bug Reports In This Thread, I have found reference to:
-Nullsoft Portable Music Player Support v1.27 [ml_pmp.dll]
-Nullsoft USB Device Plug-in v1.1 [pmp_usb.dll]

Searching the Plug-ins for these dlls produces no result.
Searching the web for these dlls produces "One for Nunz" notepad lists of plugins installed on other user's machines.

What do I do now? Could you be so kind as to provide additional instructions and links?

These plugins are part of Winamps Pro and Full installers and you can check them in the components page of the installer.

When these plugins are installed and you plug your external HDD in, while Winamp is running, it asks you if you want to mange the drive with Winamp. Press 'Yes' and then you can see you external HDD in Media Library > Portable Players
