  • RAC - a live leveler (gain control) plugin

Original post http://forums.winamp.com/showpost.ph...71&postcount=8 (sorry for hijacking)

Maybe you check out a Winamp-plugin I made, which levels all sound live while playing. Version 1.1 controls the gain in the mid frequencies for better listening pleasure.

The plugin is stuck in the Winamp-plugin-review for months now. Somebody still doing this for Winamp? I even made a new version since then, version 1.1. You can download it from the site at

download winamp plugin to set constant audio apmlitude freeware open source

On the site go to the "RAC".

The plugin is best suited for movies, but it works on music too. Play around with the settings if you like.

interesting, how does it work? compression? buffers? does it adjust gain midway thru a song? i'd not be into that. but for some internet streams, wavs and so on, i could see a use.

It actually watches the amplitude ceilings of the sound and calculates the amplification gain to match the channels maximum loudness. So its real time. Its somewhat similar to compression but not exactly like it.

Please download and try it out. Your ears will understand immediately. At least better than I can explain.

    Hello again,

I see from the other thread, your DSP would require stacking to work with another DSP. I already use an old commercial product that may be problematical to stack with yours. I know output stackers are banned on the main site, have to check for DSP stackers.

Would it be possible to adapt your plug-in to work with windows media player? That's what I use to watch videos and downloaded movies.

It sounds like a great idea!

      Porting the RAC

Yes, I will definitely adapt and port the plugin to other players, decoders and renderers. I have searched for such a plugin quite a long time and ended up coding it myself in the most direct way as an SPS. But to port it will take some time as I do not have enough of it right now - time.

If you want to use the RAC Winamp plugin with other players, there may be another possibility. Although I could not make it work until now, there is a Winamp 2-plugin-entry in the ffdshow-audio-decoder. I use the decoder with the K-Lite Codec Pack. When you play a movie, click its icon in the system tray.

The principle of the RAC plugin is actually not too complex but most effective. I do not have the problem with too loud volume or not understanding any whispering in the movies any more.

Have you tried it out yet? How do you like it? Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

I use the Shark007 codec package, it also has the ffdshow decoders. What are the exact steps needed to get your plug-in to work with ffdshow?

I did find a DSP stacker, so I intend to try RAC on my music files in a day or two.
