Sure, totally agree. But that's for broadcasters using shoutcast. Again, not a big number and since AAC persists on upgrades, it explains the lack of comments.

and i agree with you again, have used it once but almost nobody used that stream , people stay with what they are familiar with and that is still mp3.

If they weren't there'd be no reason to use any lossy format.

Playback compatibilty isn't much of a problem with AAC anymore either.
As to why the users of an audio player don't miss an encoder... (the more techy users never used Winamp to rip CDs anyway)

I really appreciate reading the reviews and tips. Since its inception, Winamp has always been my faithful music player. I will now install 5.8 to my windows 7's & 10. I hope it will continue to whip the llamas butt for the next decade. I tip my hat to all involved.

So in the time since these posts, other threads have popped up regarding crashes, mainly when doing scans of ur audio files.

I personally have had no such problems yet, but it seems others have, and that's disappointing. Basically, the issue is usually a bad file in some way, be it the tag, file header, etc. Winamp then handles the bad file poorly by crashing.

These are not new issues. They existed in 5.666 and prior; 5.8 was supposed to fix them once and for all. It seems that hasn't happened.

              WHAT YOU CAN DO:

If Winamp ever crashes on you while scanning, go to watch folders in prefs, and generally u can see the file it stops on during a scan. Copy the bad files and upload them so the Devs can reproduce and fix the issue. Then fix the originals using mp3val or similar utilities.

Without example bad files the issues can't be fixed!!! Thx.

Well, everybody with crashes can try the DrO WACUP Update and see if That fixes the problem. But remember that you have to use version 5.666 as the starting point and not 5.8

And what if u used 5.8? What happens?

What if u manually port wacup stuff to 5.8?

Just upgraded from 5.666 to 5.8 on my Win7 i7, 16gb RAM, SSD, Quadro graphics, wired keyboard.

The upgrade went well, library seems fine, it took only about 30 secs to get my playlist looking how I like it.

Possible bug report is in the visualisation window, pressing "randomly change preset" does not change the preset but toggles my Scroll lock keyboard light. Preset = default Milkdrop c2.25c.

                    Could someone confirm this please?

Milkdrop uses scroll lock to toggle randomly changing presets every x seconds (x can be set in preferences (plus additional random time) (ctrl-p > plug-ins > visualization > milkdrop > configure, only works when milkdrop isn't running)).

The button in the vis window does the same, hence scroll lock going on or off. On meaning the preset is "locked" and random changing is off.

We don't need no stinking intuitive interface.

I installed WinAmp 5.8 to see if it would solve my freeze-up problem that started suddenly the other day with the old 5.66 version. It was good for a bit, but then did the same thing.

                        1) Has anybody else seen WinAmp freeze such that the ?

                        2) BIGGER PROBLEM: What magic incantation makes WinAmp stream online feeds again?

This is my primary use for WinAmp because it excels at playing Internet streams, but I just can't seem to convince it to play streams on any of these installation attempts. It has worked great for years until this upgrade.

I'm running Win7 for now, but will probably be installing Win10 on a new machine that I am building soon.

I tried installing 5.8 over top of the old 5.66 that started this whole mess. No change.
I uninstalled WinAmp and installed 5.8 with very limited options, still no change.
I uninstalled WinAmp AND preferences after backing up the directory, then installed 5.8 with the "full" selection and it still won't play Internet streams of any kind. It just skips right over them to the local sound files in the playlist.

Any suggestions? Is this a result of them removing a bunch of components to divorce them from AOL? Thanks in advance.

U appear to have 3rd party plugins, remove them. Also try the safe mode inside winamp prefs.

Also post some example stream links.

It looks like I can't post links because the last half of my question #1 above was a link to a screen grab of the frozen WinAmp. I guess a Junior Member can't do much.

It freezes even with that plug-in removed and won't play streams either.

In Safe Mode it won't play anything at all including local sound files on disk that it plays in full mode. It just drops all the way to the last file at the bottom of the playlist.

Is 5.8 supposed to play Internet streams?

                              Yes.

Uninstall everything and run ccleaner. Then install 5.666 to c:\winamp\

                              (Custom folder, not the default)

Then try local files and streams. If they work, then install 5.8 to that same directory.

That's a good idea. I've never liked storing data files that can be written to in the Program Files tree anyway. Thanks.
