  • So, about that mystical Winamp beta...

To anyone that has signed up for the beta program to hopefully hear something from them, did you? And if so, what did the email contain? (paraphrased if possible)

A friend of mine signed up to their sketchy looking beta program (why only ask for our name and email address?) and hasn't heard from them since...

Given that their site has had an overall negative reception since it's inception, I have relatively low hopes of anything good coming out of it (given that they kept promising things that never happened).

What do you think of this whole thing? Do you believe that we'll hear from them ever again after this?
May or may not attempt to push WACUP to you, totally not, no. Why would I even?
And may or may not also have told you so...

We both agree that 5.8 was something that shouldn't have touched the internet as 5.666 (and WACUP) has done it's job with less issues compared to the leaked beta

Color me curious though, what's with the optimism?
I don't see why anyone who followed the Winamp scene from 2013 to present would have any optimism left

after 2019 ,when they announced the new winamp , i wasn't optimistic at all
but knowing who announced it on this forum gave me the impression that it's going to happen.

I think we can argue for days on being optimistic about this new fabled Winamp or not, but it gets boring over time...

To get back to the original question of why I even made this thread to begin with, have you heard back from their beta program?

Soo... that twitter post today didn't spark any confidence whatsoever, to put it bluntly.

100k people signed up? I mean... sure, I guess, sign up to some newsletter? Surely that can't be just to collect data... right?

I want to be proven wrong but with this next stunt... I'm honestly not convinced something new is coming...

Yeah, and the real humans that did sign up gave their data up for a supposed "beta tester sign up" page.
Unfortunately I don't have the link that led to the beta sign up as I'd love to see what Discord's preview spat out, I do have a screenshot of me sending a friend to sign up for that newsletter (not gonna sign up myself) and upon Discord showing the sites preview...

Oops... so it's all just to collect data after all, huh?

                        long answer:

What is Winamp? Why is Winamp? How is Winamp? All these burning questions and issues discussed within.

                        short answer:

install 5.666 first, then 5.8 over top.

the differences are slight overall, but i know of no good reason not to do it that way.

BTW, off-topic, I wanted to ask before (I read it elsewhere, maybe from another user or yourself), how do you use wAmp in your car? On what hardware? An SSD laptop, or ditto custom machine with dash screen? How do you control it -- touch, voice, ...? (Just curious; no plans/opportunity myself. And currently, I'm happy playing my old CCTs when rollin'. Yes, that's compact cassette tape. I am slowly listening to all my old carriers.)

                            Thanks for derailing everyone...

                            Before coming back on topic:

                            @MrSinatra

I find it highly interesting that you first install 5.666 and then 5.8 on top of it, what makes 5.8 better than plain 5.666? Asking out of curiosity.

                            Back on topic...

I'm not too sure what to expect from RN/AV at the moment, a Winamp that supports artists? Seems like a great idea, but in the same breath they are willing to kill off the classic Winamp we know, not that I would want to actively use it, but it's still disappointing to witness.

And may or may not also have told you so...

Ya. I'm very curious too as on how installing winamp 5.8 over a fresh install of 5.666 will make 5.8 better?
Is there any specific issue it solves? Pls do share details (if any).
