  • Winamp becomes a mess from a day to another (Windows 11 Compatibility)

Winamp is still one of my favorite music player. I have been using it for years without having problems. Until... Until I upgraded to Windows 11... Winamp crashes with a lot of skins (e.g Big Bento Modern by Vichtor), crashes in playing some mp3s and plugins stop working normally (Classic Spectrum analyser does "illegal operation" to Winamp and it needs to close) and this annoying classic equalizer on Modern skins. Thankfully, there was a problem which I was able to solve. That's with file association. Windows didn't want Winamp as associated music player and the icons that I have installed weren't displaying.

    I fixed by doing this:
    1. Go to settings -> apps
    2. Default apps
    3. There, enter on the top the file extension that you want.
Warning! On some computers will have Winamp associated already but the icons won't be displayed.
    To fix this:
Enter the extension with uppercase: (.MP3) instead of (.mp3) and associate Winamp with this filetype.

Do the same for other extensions that you want to be opened with Winamp.

    That fixed the problem.

Anyways, I decided to go on to 5.8 and... the things became worse.
Every TIME I open a file or open Winamp a compatibility message appears. Believe me, that's super annoying... I went back to 5.666

Some people might say: Why don't you get WACUP?
Well, I don't like Wacup. It doesn't have file association and there is a problem with title encoding.

Well, that's my problems with Winamp.
I am still waiting for the new Winamp...

I honestly don't know what might be the problem but I've been using Winamp on Windows 11 since the day one of its availability without any issues.

Which version of Winamp are you using successfully on Win 11?

Believe it or not installing Winamp 5.7 fixed all my problems!

I had to search very deep the search results to find it. I found it on a torrent which I am seeding now.

The only thing that I have to do is to remove the Winamp cloud crap. But it is beautiful!

But why finding this version is rare?

because it was in beta, never fully released

also, if you take a look at 5.7's about page, you'll notice the build number being lower than 5.666's (that being build 3516)

you're better off with either 5.666 or WACUP really, and just from re-reading the thread, did you ever bring up the issue of "title encoding" to dro?
May or may not attempt to push WACUP to you, totally not, no. Why would I even?
And may or may not also have told you so...

5.7 is a beta with a version number lower that the last official release 5.666 so don't go there , you never know what it will do to your system.

It needs patience to see what build should you use because some of them are expired. 5.7 is hard to find and it can't be installed on top of other versions, and it comes with intergrated dead bloat on media library and setup. Dro said that Winamp 5.63 or 5.64 (I don't remember) has the 5.7 bugfixes expect the Winamp cloud. Seriously I dont recommend it. As 0x5066 says, you'd be better of 5.666 or WACUP, as 5.8 is unfinished.
