This quote did not age well unfortunately.
I haven't even found a thread on this forum discussing the new Web Player versus the Desktop App.

This seems as good a thread as any though to touch on the topic: a web-only based player for Winamp, a brand built on personal music collections and shoutcast radio, is going to crash and burn in spectacular fashion imo.

I don't want that to be the case, but the current "plugins" released in Winamp 5.9 for the new services offered via the Web Player... just open the web page in your browser. These aren't plugins, they're hyperlinks with 0 integration with the desktop app. And there is very little clarity in the message of what Winamp even wants the Fanzone and Hotmix projects to be. FanZone is somewhat clear, but what protections are there against spam and users registering other artists tracks? Do I own the music I pay to access, or am I paying for limited streaming? It's all quite unclear. The new winamp also requires a new registration (no link to the forums), but the hotmix plugin in 5.9.X redirects you to another site, which requires yet another separate registration and talks about subscriptions as well.

The installment package for the current (new) version of Winamp includes 16 input plug-ins. The user can chose which plug-ins are installed. A few plug-ins support more than 1 format. All the formats I use are supported, but IDK if all common consumer audio file formats are supported.

ONLY if the format isn't already supported by WinnAmp.. The current player pretty much comes with / supports all common consumer audio file types now. No additional downloads or codecs required.

Can the same be said for the new version of the player? IDK

    Hi PPNSteve,

Ok, I agree with you. Good that is not an actual skin. It's probably some graphic artist's idea of what a future user interface could look like. I'm currently using a 3rd party modern skin instead of one from the installation package. I'm also able to use some 3rd party plug-ins that are not in the installation package. So far in my testing, v5.9.1 seems to be a good upgrade of v5.666, imo.

    Hi Kastagir,

I'm not sure what you mean. If I'm understanding what you're asking correctly, then the answer would be yes.

I've read that some users are having issues getting their modern skins to work. Luckily for me, the classic and modern skins I used with older versions of Winamp still work for me with the current version.

I mostly use Winamp to play my locally stored music files, but I do use it to play web-based DJ programs from time to time. There are some bugs and lack of past features, but the current version is acceptable for my needs and I expect it to get better. During the extensive delay in Winamp development, I became a beta tester for WACUP. The WACUP developer is working to provide an independent desktop music player that started based on the 5.666 version of Winamp.
The above screencap is from the new winamp player page on their website.. Seems to common accrodd the player, fanzone, and creator's thing they're doing.. hence the do not want.

I'm currently using BigBento on 5.9.1 as shown below:

Size:	620.8 KB

So far everything I've tried works as expected (not counting removed items in this release, of course)

So if this is going to be the new desktop interface / skin / player, it is already a DO NOT WANT:

People wwho use WinAmp aren't using it for streams or to interact with artists (which WOULD be a good idea in the (current player's) web tab), we use it to manage our downloaded and/or ripped from cd file-based collection of media. We WANT a player with playlists, folder / album views, and so on. EXACTLY like the current 5.9.x player.

    What say you?

I had the same question. I think I have the last v.5.9 (updated from 5.666). I like the old interface. Big Bento is my current go to and I don't want that to change in the application (or, if it isn't the default, at least make it available.) Sometimes, skins just don't cover all the aspects of the default interface, IMHO.
