But where do they save them on the phone? Is it in the 'protected' area or is it on the SD card? Specifically, I'd like to be able to see the m3u/pls files and copy them manually. (Don't run windows anymore so can't use the winamp PC app... Linux is good...)

Playlist location
I have a similar problem. I create and edit all playlists within Android Winamp and they aren't visible anywhere on the phone that I can find. I don't ever hook my phone to a computer to manage playlists. When I use Titanium Backup to backup all phone apps and switch to a different ROM on my phone, Winamp restores fine on the new ROM, however all the playlists are gone. I am a spin instructor and use my phone as a music player for classes, so my playlists are important. Where are they stored? Thanks.

I've found out that all playlists are stored in a database, its location being (at least on my phone): /data/data/com.android.providers.media/databases/external-2119113.db.
I suspect the number in the filename will differ from device to device.

I have android 2.1 on moto Defy.
I have found a way to manage playlist on winamp for android.
When I copied my music to ma SD Card, I also made the playlist in every folder .
I started Winamp and he found the playlists after a few seconds.
I hope this is useful for others.

^ i just wanted to say thanks for this!(hopefully it won't be considered bumping)
it worked for me by creating a playlist in winamp on my pc of my android music folder & then i saved the playlist as an .m3u in the same music folder on my 2.3.4 Evervolv Incredible.
this could be a hassle if you constantly add files to your playlist (like i do), but it's better than not having a playlist at all.
i used to be able to create or easily add music files to a playlist in Astro File Manager, but lately this has worked only sporadically. most of the time it would say it added the files, but when i opened the playlist in android winamp, it would be empty.
that is why i tried to find another way to add a playlist on my droid, so thanks again

thanks
Thanks much for that info. At the very least, copying those files should carry my playlists over to a new installation.
If not, you can use an sql browser to view the files contents (I like sqlite personal cause it's the first free one I found that's easy to use), and hopefully copy the relevant records over to the new database.
