  • How To Ruin A Website brought to you by...

    ...the new owners of Winamp.

Seriously! The winamp website has become a joke.
Poor design and the get winamp links point to this forum.

As for what used to be the best media player out there
...it has become buggy to the point of being unusable.
Every shoutcast station not in my bookmarks, crashes winamp.

I have upgraded and spent hours trawling through
    forum to find bug cures.

Unfortunately these bugs are reflected in the quality of the website too.
This is why |I am posting this thread in this section.

Has winamp been bought with the sole purpose of running it into the ground?
The website design and the fact the software has become next to useless
suggests this to be the case.

I have been using winamp since v1 and for the first time I can say
that the software and website has become exactly worth what I paid for them...
    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Working hard to re-energize winamp my Llama's ass!

Fantastic first post. Gave me a laugh.
I think you made a mistake and have downloaded iTunes.
    :-)

all of the reasons for the place holder site post-sale are covered in the thread which it directs to along with why there are no direct downloads and won't be until a new version is released at some point in 2015.

as for crash issues with Winamp, without info tool reports (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....161361#plugins) and crash reports (as the current build available from the first link at http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....74929#download is able to generate and have them attached in a reply), there is little based on what you've said for us to offer a) reasons and b) solutions for Winamp crashing for you.

Haha ... you gave me a laugh back.
When iTunes came out the Macevangelists were full of it...over a 1000 stations they said...
whoopee i told 'em, Winamp has about 15000, a better interface, a great equalizer and i9t never crashes. I still have v2 on an old 586....saving that for my software museum!

It's just that the website now is dire, the design of Shoutcast interface in Winamp is poor. Previously it was really well laid out. Strangely a lot of sites seem to be adopting what looks like accessibility sites for the partially sighted, with enormous text...or else they are trying to design sites for all devices.

I think the owners should fix the site, or, revert to the old interface. What exists now gives me little confidence that the new Winamp will have a well thought out interface.

I heard Winamp was sold for $5M. If that is right, someone got a bargain. It wasn't broken so why try to fix it?

        Pleased to have met you.

        cheers
        Merv

Thanks for the reply. I will write a detailed crash report in the appropriate place.

it's again a placeholder and it's know it needs to be sorted out but won't be until there's a new Winamp client (as it's still not been decided if it'll keep the web-based mode or go native - my preferred option so it's more like the 2.9x/early 5.x way).

the old site cannot be gone back to as a) none of it exists and b) it was a complete mess of years of internal AOL related changes which meant it couldn't even be directly re-hosted, hence the placeholder (again, all of which has been covered in the news thread and other discussion threads).

many would disagree with that comment (myself included to a point as a user who became a plug-in developer and then an actual developer). and as has been covered with things a year ago, AOL no longer saw Winamp (and SHOUTcast) as things it wanted and that is why things are as they currently are.

Thanks again. I understand all your points. At one point AOL had really pushed the boat out. There were great music videos and the like and then, the boat ran aground and slipped under the lapping waves of competition...or so it seems.

Right now I think Winamp can do itself a massive favor by designing a better temporary site.
Public perception is everything. Again, I thank you for your logical answers.

              cheers

Yeah chill guys. You really expect there to be a fully functioning website when they were dumped in the hole by AOL and they're concentrating on fixing up for a new Winamp?
We must remember that art is art. Still, on the other hand, water is water, isn't it? And east is east, and west is west. And if you take cranberries, and stew them like applesauce, it tastes much more like prunes then rhubarb does. Now you tell me what you know.

                  LOL good one.

I haven't seen any bugs yet so I don't know what he's getting at.
