  • CD access in 5.02/3

I'm running Windows2000, and I find that, with any form of playback from a CD, compressed files or CD audio, the player will play for a while, and then the output will just stop, although Winamp thinks it's still playing. This happens randomly between one and three audio tracks into the program on the disk. there is no error message displayed. I have no Creative plugins in my "plugins" folder.

I'm raising this in connection with Winamp because files will play from CD without this problem in other programs. Does Winamp address the drive in some different way? Is it sucking up too many system resources compared to other audio playing software?

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Try the menu play method...

Click on the main menu icon > select 'Play' > select 'Audio CD x:' where "x" is the drive of choice

    -or-

Right-click on a "empty" space in the main or player window > select 'Play' > select 'Audio CD x:' where "x" is the drive of choice

      CD access in Winamp5.02/3

Thanks for trying but, that's the method I always use for playing audio CDs; I have "auto-insert notification" turned off. Also, as I said, the problem effects any kind of playback from a CD. In other words, MP3 files etc behave in the same way as do audio CDs; all with no error message; it just stops.

        Maybe this...

Ctrl+P > Plug-ins > Input > check or uncheck 'Enable digital audio extraction when possible' and check or uncheck 'Enable Sonic engine when possible'

If you have no luck please post a reply with system specs as described here. Good Luck

          CD access in Winamp5.02/3pro.

Some limited progress in that, if I go back to audio CD playback via the sound card's "CD audio" input, it works; but I used to be able to do it via digital extraction. The problem with playing MP3 files etc from a CD remains: It just stops with no error message. There are no "problem devices" shown in System Info, and both my CD drives behave in the same way.

Looks like you have clean startup list, no recognizable spy/adware, etc. Also, I can not see anything that may be contributing to the problem. Do you have the latest sounds drivers? Any third party plug-ins for Winamp?

              CDs and Winamp5.03A

              Hi

Yes I do have the latest sound drivers for my sound card as far as I know. The only third party plug in that is used much is the Thomson MP3PRO plug in, which is probably set to play all mp3 files by default. However, surely this wouldn't get in the way of digital CD playback of an audio CD, which I still can't do, having to rely on playback via the sound card. Unfortunately, this seems to have started from a recent re-install of Windows2000. I assume the deafening silence from other Win2K users means that others are not having this problem, unless there are no 2000 users on this forum.

If Windows Media Player and CD-DA extractor weren't playing this stuff without a glitch, I wouldn't be bugging this forum about this. Any inspirational ideas from anyone would be most gratefully received.

In the CD plugin config, checkmark "Enable DAE"
                Uncheck "Use Sonic Engine"
Place the wnaspi32.dll file from here in your Winamp dir.
                Close & reopen Winamp.

For the MP3 CD's, disable the MP3Pro plugin.

                  Hi Regwebb.

I use Win2000 SP4 with a set up similar to the one DJEgg suggests (but Adaptec ASPI layer instead of Nero). This works with no problem.

Like yourself, I've also had trouble with the SPTI interface, some programs worked o.k., others nothing. I've abandoned it entirely now and use ASPI for almost all programs that access CDs.

One program that runs purely in SPTI mode is the Microsoft 'CD Player' (Start Menu > Run > cdplayer). If this plays successfully (check it's not muted first) then it would point the finger at the Sonic Engine and ASPI would definitely be the way to go.

Post back if you have trouble getting ASPI installed, you shouldn't, the Nero ASPI layer is regarded as very reliable

                    Winamp CD access under Windows2K

                    Hi all

This was a gloomy message, which I'm now editing because, suddenly (so far), it now works.

ASPI was already installed and, according to the Adaptec check program, it was up to date.

Anyway, following the last post, I re-installed it, just because I couldn't think of anything else to do, since CD playback was uneffected by all the helpful advice I've been receiving. First though, I have now discovered that Win2K has a CD player, which I didn't know. I don't know if running it changes anything, as it only works via the sound card, but it does work. Having been told about this little discovery, I re-installed ASPI and rebooted as directed by the installer. Since then, it seems to be working properly. To avoid potential confusion, I temporarily disabled the ASPI .DLL file in the Winamp directory.

AS for MP3 playback from a CD, I haven't had time to test that yet. So far, rather than disable the MP3PRO plug in completely, I've unchecked the box that says "use for all MP3 files": I thought I should start from there.

No doubt I'll come crawling back if it stops again.

                    Thanks very much
