  • Winamp 5.03 will not play .asf files

Hello, first time posting here so please forgive any infractions.
I have searched all over this forum to find a solution to my problem to no avail. I'm trying to play music files in the .asf format but winamp will not play them. The ticker shows the name of the file but will not play the song.
Otherwise Winamp works fine. I've contacted the website that hosts the music files and they told me to contact Winamp. In general prefs. I have all files supported.
    My system:
    Windows XP HE
    Pentium 4
    Dx 9
    Thanks

ASF files are played via directshow. This means you need a directshow filter for the format they were encoded in.

Or try renaming them to .wma

      .asf to .wma?

Thanks for responding to my post. However changing the .asf file to .wma file does not fix the problem. I might not be changing the file correctly. If someone could post how to do that it would be great.
      Thanks!

Since wma and wmv are just different names for files using the asf container format I thought it might be possible to play a windows audio asf file after renaming it to wma because then it would be handled by in_wm and not in_dshow.

But I'm not an expert in MS formats.

Does the file play in WMP?

Did you install Winamp 5.03 Full with VIDEO support? Audio only or not, the video decoder would handle that file-type.
