computer reboots when winamp 5 starts and via enhanced ide driver loaded

This happens on an amd64 box with the gigabyte k8vnxp mobo. Via just released and enhanced ide driver, and this is causing it (or at least the problem went away when I uninstalled it). I tried using winamp 5.08d and 5.03 pro and the problem occurred with both.

I have exactly the same problem!!!My PC-AMD Athlon XP 2500+ MB GB 7VT600 512MB DDR400 AC97-ALC655.Leatest drivers for all including the new VIA IDE Accelerated driver.This occurs only when i start winamp.So where is the problem - WINAMP or VIA IDE?

What do you mean?

Any error messages, blue scren STOP errors, etc. before reboot?

Do you have a clean install of Winamp?

Oh and full system specs with things like your OS in there.

The PC reboots immediately after i start Winamp v5.08d clean install(or other 5.xx).No error messages, no blue screen, just restart.Same as i press the restart button.The problem is somehow connected with the new VIA IDE Accelerated driver because there were no problems before.Other people experience the same trouble

But ONLY Winamp have a problem with this driver as far as i know.My PC:

From that thread it looks liek VIa are investigating and it is a know problem some blue screen stop errors messages too so finding the cause might be easier. I'll add some comments to that thread on the VIA board later if needed.

So it looks like other people are having problems with more apps than just Winamp.
And I'm sure VIA will fix it eventually, heh.


I've got a sneaky suspicion that the conflict is with the new VIA Enhanced IDE Accelerator driver and the Sonic Burning/Ripping Engine.

If you don't want to uninstall the new VIA driver and reinstall the Hyperion IDE driver (from the 4-in-1 package, as instructed in the thread on the viaarena forums),
then you could try a clean install of Winamp 5.08d,
but uncheck 'Sonic Burning/Ripping Support' in the installer options.

Note, see here if you still require CD Ripping support (re: using wnaspi32.dll instead). However, CD Burning will no longer work in Winamp without the Sonic Engine.

Reply back here if the problem persists, even after removing the Sonic Engine.

DJ Egg's solution worked for me! Uninstalled winamp, resinstalled it without "Sonic Burning/Ripping Support" and it worked!
Nothing else had to be done, I didn't uninstall VIA's drivers, I hope it won't affect any other app...

The driver has been pulled from the site while they make an attempt to address the problems. Many chinese holidays has hampered developement of a fix, but it looks like things are picking up.

Thanks to XP's "Automatic Reboot on Crash" option being hidden where most users won't find it, they never see the error. The crach they're receiving is "BAD_POOL_HEADER", as well as a 32bit hex value on the bottom of the screen that I can't remember off the top of my head (and don't wish to recreate the issue to find out again). It seems it's not just the VIA driver. XP SP2 introduced a minor incompatibility that rarely pops up, but the VIA IDE driver exacerbated the problem, bringing around the BSOD "BAD_POOL_HEADER". While this thread reports removing burning support fixes the issue, the VIA forums report removing gen_ml.dll from Winamp's \plugins\ folder (rendering the Media Library null) fixes the issue. I can confirm the gen_ml.dll removal fix works.

You're one of the lucky bunch, like myself, that have only had the winamp issue with the new driver. Other problems that have cropped up include: HDD LED constantly on, infinite reboot loop, infinite XP load time, black screen after XP load bar, desktop image but no functionality, and more. By the way, you broke a theory I had: all of the reported extra problems came from AMD machines, but you report that yours runs fine.

btw, disabling gen_ml probably works because the burning engine won't load if there's no Media Library.

It is good to see they are fixing it. I am not sure how much the accelerator helped anyways. With it loaded winamp would skip horribly while playing mp3's every time I loaded a CD into the drive, and without the accelerator it works beautifully.
