  • How to install on USB drive

I want to install winamp on my USB drive. I was wondering if you guys know how to do that?

    What type of USB drive?
A proper hard drive (eg. 80Gb), or one of those USB Pen/Flash drives?

Just change the install path accordingly in the setup procedure.

    Winamp 5.08d Full
    _____________________________________________________

Screen 1: Accept the licence agreement. Click "Next"

Screen 2: Select components/plugins/features to install (more info). Click "Next"

    Screen 3. Select "Destination Folder".
The default folder is: "C:\Program Files\Winamp"
To change it, either type in the path yourself,
Or manually create an appropriate folder on your USB Drive first, eg.
    X:\Winamp
(where X is the correct drive letter)
and then use the Browse button in Screen 3 to locate said folder.

Screen 4: Choose Install Options (probably best to uncheck all these)
Start Menu Group (places Winamp shortcuts in Start > Programs)
    Desktop icon
    Quicklaunch Icon
System Tray Icon / Agent (places Winamp Agent in systray - see here for more info)
Associate with Audio Files (makes Winamp the default player for all supported audio formats)
Associate with Video Files (makes Winamp the default player for all supported video formats)
Associate with Audio CDs (makes Winamp the default CD Player)
Associate with playlist files (makes Winamp the default .m3u & .pls handler)
    Click "Next"

    5. Winamp installs....

However, problems could arise if/when you disconnect the drive and then you try to play any filetype associated with Winamp, because Windows will no longer be able to find Winamp...

Dj egg is on teh right track

for a flash drive, to make winamp portable, you need to follow all of his steps except step 4, disable those options adn install. then copy a dll file from the system32 dir, into the plugins folder. all you need to do is insert that drive into any computer and copy that dll to the system32 folder and winamp works.

In your reply, you stated:"then copy a dll file from the system32 dir, into the plugins folder".

My question is what is the name of the dll file that is needed?

What, I have never needed to do that? I can get mine to run just fine from my USB stick at school without this dll file (unless that it is one Win2k has by default?).

Ah for the Sonic Ripping/Burning Engine. I don't have that (or any CD support) installed for my copy that I use at school because none of the computers have CD drives (only the crap 800MHz Celerons in one classrom do). Thanks for the info though.
