Help! My protected Windows Media files don't play in Winamp anymore!!!

Our distinguished Winamp brethren and other LLama loving individuals,

Due to a security vulnerability, 5.08d versions of Winamp and below will no
longer play copy protected Windows Media files. The LLama spun us out a
new build last night fixing the issue (Hey Mike that was wicked fast
yo!).

Please download our latest version 5.08e released 2/22/05

Attn: If you already have purchased Winamp Pro, downloading the free 5.08e Full version should upgrade you automatically.

I have tried every combination of installs of plugins to rememdy this but can't get it to work. Has anyone actually gotten the wma files to play? With a stacker?

I'm having the same problem, if anyone can help I 'd be grateful. Whenever I try and play WMA flies I get the message described above. I can play these files through Mindows Media PLayer but I want to be able to play them through WinAmp. Has anyone actually suceeded in rectifying this problem?

Why the need for the doublespeak?

You guys should not use windows media to rip your files into a protected format, and then complain when it doesn't work. Why would anyone want to copy their music into a protected format that can only be played legally on one program? You will just end up having to re-rip it into an unprotected format like mp3 or ogg, or even unprotected wma files. Especially if you get a portable player. Skip the headaches and just encode to mp3, or ogg.

My biggest issue with windows media, is that its very hard for people just getting started to tell if what you encoded is protect enabled or not. Not only that, but there are like 5 different types of windows media files. And half of them don't work on certain players. and you can't figure out what type it is, because the extention is the same on all of them.

Encode to ogg or mp3. With those formats, theres no protection to screw your entire music collection over if you don't back up your encryption key. All mp3 files are compatible in nearly all players. Same with ogg. More players are popping up for ogg thanks to iriver.

OK, my daughter for some reason has all her music files in windows media audio format, how can she change them into mp3?

well i have read people's explanation on what to do to play wma files but my probleme is a little different : my winamp does show me any error message begging for direct oupout ... it simply crash each time i try to play a .wma files

i have winamp 5.08e with the french plugin

I didn't rip my files to protected WMA, I bought them that way.

And it's not that hard to tell if they are protected or not when you try to rip them, it asks you right up front.

But I personally use a different program to encode to mp3.

In fact, I use a total of 3 different programs to do all my music stuff.

Try using musicstacker It will play and record the music. After the music is recorder I was able to move it to mu iPud and napstar music player. I was also able to burn the recorded music to CD.

to convert my wmas to mp3s i use "cd to mp3 ripper". it has a built in conversion app that can convert from an to any of ogg wav wma and mp3
