  • Error when reinstalling

I started getting a 'Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close' error. I cannot fully uninstall it or even re-install. I get the following error when trying to reinstall.

Running Windows XP Pro and trying to install with the latest version of Winamp...

    Help!!

Is Winamp open? Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Go to the processes tab, and see if Winamp.exe is listed. If so, terminate it.

Also, go to your Winamp directory and make sure that none of the files are read-only.

Are you running a full account, or a limited?

Well, Winamp is not running at all. And I am on an administrator account...

One possible cause is that the winamp.exe file is set as "read-only" which means that it cannot be written to, modified, or deleted. To make it not read-only, do this:

        1. Go to "drive:\Program files\Winamp" in Windows Explorer
        2. Right-click on the winamp.exe file and left-click "properties".
        3. On the bottom, you see a few checkboxes. If read-only has a checkmark in there, uncheck the checkbox and okay the changes. If there is no checkbox, first check to make sure the file name is "winamp.exe". If it is and there is no checkmark, then proceed to step 5.
        4. Try reinstalling Winamp then.
        5. If the file name shown is winamp.exe and there is no checkmark in the "read-only" box, it's likely that some other program is using Winamp in some way. Try a clean install of Winamp.

If a clean install still gives the same error, then delete the entire Winamp directory bypassing the uninstall.

Read only is not checked. I cannot delete anything in the winamp folder. I have also tried installing it to another folder but the same message appears as before: "Error opening file for writing..."

I have even tried booting in safe mode and deleting the folder, but it still will not let me. This is wierd and I'm really getting pissed off with Windows Media Player!!

OK, I've just discovered I was running my user account as a guest account... It must have happened when I was messing around with passwords etc the other day. Thanks for the help people, it works now!
