WMA not working...

When I click a link for a sample song on a site, it launches windows media player. The file extension is .wma and I've gone to prefferences and made winamp my default player including .wma files. However, the site still launches windows media player. Also, the song will play in winamp if I manually copy/paste the url in it.

On a side note, a certain plug in tells me that "winamp is not streaming". If it's not a stream and it's not on my HD, then what the heck is it? lol

The site is www.20thecoundownmagazine.com and the link is the second one. The first is video, and that's a different battle all together. Let's just stick with the audio. It's of Chris Tomlin's song.

The URL starts with mms://. Those URLs are probably associated to WMP, overriding the WMA file association with Winamp.
I'm not sure if it's even possible to change the mms association...

I don't have a certain plugin so can't really help with that (would be against the forums rules also), but probably it doesn't recognize URLs starting with mms://.

Or if you want Winamp to enqueue as default instead of clear the playlist & play...

I could've made a .reg file for you to automate the process, but you didn't include your Windows OS.

Just right click on that "(Default)" string in the right pane, select "modify", and copy+paste that command line (assuming winamp is installed to the default dir).

as for the fact, that i never did something in registry, i did this ... start > run > regedit but i found no entry with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS\ ... many other things, but not that.

just adding the key now, and if yes, how?

Hmm, I'm pretty certain that the MMS key is there by default on most Windows OS'es, and if not then is definitely created by all versions of Windows Media Player.

If the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS key doesn't exist, then you'll need more than just the \shell\open\command subkey & string.

I don't recommend messing with the registry unless you really know what you're doing.

What's your Windows OS, Windows Media Player version and Winamp version?

Let me know, and I'll provide a .reg file that you can import into the registry.

dunno, but maybe it´s not there, coz wmp is mostly crippled down to only whats needed, same with ie v6.0.2800.1106

HKCR\MMS reg key for Win2k/XP attached
(unzip mms.reg from the zip and double click to merge with the registry)

This will make Winamp the default mms:// protocol handler

The .reg file assumes Winamp to be installed to the default location of:
C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe

If it's not, then you'll need to edit the .reg file in Notepad accordingly.

Also note that the .reg file sets 'Play in Winamp' as the default action
(ie. replaces the playlist and plays the mms:// stream).

If you want 'Enqueue in Winamp' to be the default action for mms:// protocol,
then edit this line as follows:

From:

To:
