  • 5.23 Buffering

5.23 is the last straw for me and Winamp. After my "upgrade" to 5.23 I cannot watch any Television Streams because every stream buffers constantly. Every single steam. 5.22 was bad enough with the no stream available crap but this is impossible. With the buffering of the video streams they are completely unusable as the audio and the video are out of sync. Not to be out done, the Winamp team extended the problem to the radio streams as well which isn't as bad until you switch streams and both play simultaneously.

I thought that when we say upgrade in the same sentence as download that was supposed to mean an improvement? Of late Winamp and upgrade has actually come to mean a degradation of service and usability.

I have reverted back to 5.13 and everything is working well again.

It all works fine for the vast majority of Winamp's millions of users, so at a guess, the problem must be somewhere at your end.

Howzit....Whatzit...what tha...? How to tune up, and keep your Winamp player humming along. Search this Forum to find others who have driven down your road and have advice and tips to help you out.

btw, afaik, 5.13 only lists 30 streams, doesn't it?

Funny how I read other posts about folks running into buffering problems and the No Streams Available errors but I guess all those are on their end of the pipe.

I posted to the Forum for technical support, not for some random guy's wild speculation about what the problem might be.

It's only random speculation because you didn't provide us with any helpful information that will help us to help you.

Assuming it's just Shoutcast TV streams where the problem occurs... have you even checked your in_nsv buffer settings (Prefs > Plugins > Input > in_nsv > config)?

Which Shoutcast TV streams in particular? (the few I've tried play perfectly, eg, Giga Digital, Demoscene, Family Guy, and a couple of pr0n things).

I haven't seen too many posts about buffering problems... though in most cases, it's usually due to trying to view a stream with a bitrate higher than what the internet connection can handle (eg. trying to stream a 700kbps stream over a 500k connection). Either that or the system is bogged down with spyware/malware, or some other concurrently running process is using a high percentage of the available bandwidth. Though in general, buffering issues with TV streams can also be caused by problems with the server at the stream provider's end (remember, all TV streams are hosted/provided by 3rd-parties and not by Nullsoft).

Of course, it's all speculation without relevant system specs, a HijackThis log, a full plugin list, etc etc... (did you even click the link I posted in my first reply?)

The "No streams available" error is an intermittent serverside issue, although I haven't personally seen it for a couple of weeks now, heh.

        afaic, 5.23 rocks...

I didn't list any particular stream because it happened to every stream! As we speak you can see for your self by looking at the IPTelev Stream in Shoutcast TV. Video is streaming ahead of audio.

As for the folks having the buffering problems that I mentioned previously; of course read and followed the alleged work arounds. Dropping the bit rate to 5000 on the nsv plug-in worked great! Not. I also tried the uninstall and reinstall one and on the third attempt it worked. 5.23 is working with the exception of the A/V thing on a lot of the streams.

In regards to your sticky speaking to the No Streams Available issue, of course I read those too. I found them to be quite like getting a traffic report where the reporter says that he has seen a traffic accident at some point in his life but he doesn't know where any current traffic accidents are or how to avoid them. And besides, it's a problem with the roads and bridges department side of the network. Interesting, plausible yes, but generally not very helpful especially when they were written in April.

Before anyone asks, The Hijack application seems to poll information on installed applications, running processes and registry entries. Therefore, I presume we are looking for the run of the mill; Zone Alarm is blocking Winamp access to the internet kind of problems. The answer is no, I am not a newbie who just began using Winamp last week and yes I tried to eliminate the obvious before coming here for help.

I've actually used Winamp since 2000 and never really had any problem with either the free or the professional versions until the last few builds came out. It's not my intention to sound like a cranky old network engineer when it comes to things like these but I chafe at seemingly being dismissed out of hand because, everything is fine on my end kind of technical support. While I'm not a Winamp Hacker, I'm not technically naive either.

So the only problem you've got now is the video and audio are out of sync?

I can't access the IPTelev Stream at the moment, because all I'm getting is ICY 400 Server Full, but I'll keep trying.

I'm currently viewing the Family Guy stream (SaltWaterChimp) and it's playing perfectly ok, and the audio & video are perfectly in sync.

You haven't maybe put some value into the "offset video from audio by" field in in_nsv config, have you? Default value should be '0'

Note, the reason why we ask for a HJT log is to see what other processes are running concurrently, eg. to see if maybe there's any conflicts, any spyware/malware present, or if there's maybe any other process running which might be using/interfering with the internet connection/available bandwidth, etc etc. The log also tells us your Windows OS and Sevice Pack, and Internet Explorer version.

A dxdiag log would show us system specs (cpu, ram, audio & video cards, etc) and whether there's any hardware/driver related problems.

A my_plugin_list.txt log would show us if you've installed any potentially dodgy 3rd-party Winamp plugins.

We usually ask for all 3 logs zipped up into one zip and attached to a post.

I can't see any major concerns or red flags in your HJT log, other than maybe a few cpu/memory intensive (but all legit) apps loading at startup.

Please also include internet connection type & speed in any reply, and maybe try an online broadband speed test somewhere to see if you are actually getting a connection at that reputed speed.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what's causing your problem. Sorry.

            Anyone else?

If you are getting off snyc sound on some of the video on IpTeleV its becuase we had to re-encode all of our video to conserve on bandwidth. Some of the video didn't like the new conversion so some of the audio is off, and some of the videos cause the server to crash (we removed all of those that cause the crash). We are currently working on correcting the off sync audio. If you are watching our paid streams and getting the buffer issues, it might be that your internet connection may not be fast enough. The video peaks at 1.2mbps sometimes, but if you are paying, then you don't need to post here, but contact the support on our site.

Hope this shines some light on your issues.
