an mp3 file ripped from a disc noisy in Winamp, clean in RealPlayer

I played an mp3 file ripped from a CD in Winamp. It was very noisy. I played the same file in Real, and the file was fine.

I then played a web stream in Winamp, it was fine.

I did a re-install of Winamp and had the same results.

Anyone have any ideas???

Can you confirm, that you're using v5.3 plus the 5.3a update pack?

If you can reproduce it still with the newer version, then provide more infos about your system. Also, it would be nice, if you could provide a link to an example file, which doesn't work in Winamp. And make sure that you've not installed a third party mp3 input plug-in.

O.K., Koopatrooper, I installed 5.3, and the pack.

I attached a hijack this log. My system is WinXPSP2 with plenty of resources.

Hijack this produced a .log file , which will not attach. I have the file, tell me what to do to it, and I will take care of it.

I tried to attach the music file,10,000kbits, but the reply wouldn't go.

Change the extention from .log to .txt

What you can attatch is limited to make things a bit safer.

In general, attatching .zip files is often the easiest way around it.

No, but you could upload the file to www.sendspace.com and post the link here.

Could you also confirm that you are not using any third-party plugins? (especially mp3 input plugins)

Also try disabling the Equalizer (Alt+G) and make sure you do not have a DSP plugin selected (Prefs > Plug-ins > DSP).
You could also try these DirectSound output tweaks.

Ok, let's deal with the hjt log first.

Disable those two startup processes instantly, and delete the associated files (in Safe Mode, if needs be).

Run an up-to-date AntiVirus scan (full system scan).


As for whether that's got anything to do with your Winamp problem, I'm not entirely sure...

The Arvo Part mp3 plays perfectly ok for me in Winamp.

O.K., thanks for the help. I appreciate the tip on the problem files, and I got rid of them.

But, as you guessed, they are not the problem. The same mp3 file runs noisy in Winamp on another machine, and clean on that machine in Real Player.

I checked that machine for the problem files, and they were not present.

I also, after rebooting, launched the mp3 in Winamp on the machine thatg did have the probelm files, and it still was noisy.

So, I appreciate it that all you folks jumped right in to help, that's what makes the Winamp community such a pleasure.

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

Please try a clean install and make sure that you are using latest drivers for Sound, Graphic and Chipset.
