  • Vista Problems

    Hi,

I recently did a clean install to a German Vista Home Premium. Since this event, Winamp is quite instable. I have a crash quite often. It's usually something like that:
    code:
    Problemsignatur:
    Problemereignisname: APPCRASH
    Anwendungsname: winamp.exe
    Anwendungsversion: 5.3.5.1305
    Anwendungszeitstempel: 4648e17d
    Fehlermodulname: ntdll.dll
    Fehlermodulversion: 6.0.6000.16386
    Fehlermodulzeitstempel: 4549bdc9
    Ausnahmecode: c0000005
    Ausnahmeoffset: 00062086
    Betriebsystemversion: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
    Gebietsschema-ID: 1031
    Zusatzinformation 1: 93e7
    Zusatzinformation 2: e5c5848a537e479b49aeb06539ab262d
    Zusatzinformation 3: 51cf
    Zusatzinformation 4: 0d448cf76cde3f622886745af1d32ecf

The additional information 1-4 ("Zusatzinformation") is always different but everything else from this crashlog stays the same.
It occurs sometimes just because of skipping a track or adding some tracks to the playlist; trying 5 times to add an album to an empty playlist will cause 3 crashes.

Actually, I did have another crash when loading an album, it occurred when gathering each track's length. I accidentally did not save this log but the error module name was not "ntdll.dll" but "px.dll_unloaded".

I'm listening through DirectSound-Plugin using default settings, but there are no differences to the Wave-out Plugin. Music-files are usual mp3-files with stereo-encoding.
My soundcard is Creative's SoundBlaster Live! Value using the 2003's driver for XP (the Vista one via Windows Update sounds real stupid, sound is like over-powering an amplifier). I'm afraid, Winamp is the only application with this issue (actually, no other application has similar problems to my knowledge).

Rest of the system is the following:
    - Asus A8N32-SLI
    - Opteron 165 (2x 1.8 GHz)
    - 2 GiB RAM
    - GeForce 7900GT
    - SoundBlaster Live! Value
    - Hauppauge! HVR-1300 TV-Card
    - Windows Vista Home Premium (German)
    - Winamp 5.35 (no 3rd party plugins, classic skin)

Hope you'll find a solution soon, I've been using Winamp for 8 years now and it is still the best media player on earth to me.

    Best regards,
    rellek

xp or 2003 drivers are NOT compatable with windows vista if anything they will break a lot if not everything.

creative's latest drivers are avaliable from their website(not windows update)
Shop online at creative.com for wireless speakers and computer soundbars, Bluetooth headphones, Sound Blaster sound cards, gaming headsets. Free shipping on orders over $35.

I suggest uninstalling winamp and reinstalling without "sonic burning/ripping support"(px.dll) because it breaks windows vista 64bit support, and is not really made for vista at all.(its beyond our control at the moment)

see how you go with that

      Hi,

actually Winamp is the only application crashing, so I don't really think it's the sound driver. The XP-driver was from creative.com, but my sound card is not supported any longer, that means no native vista driver. But the XP one works fine (except with winamp).

I'll try reinstalling without the burning/ripping support.

Let's see what happens... But I'm quite sure this should fix the rare px.dll-problem.

PS: It's maybe interesting and I forgot it, I'm using the 32-bit version of windows vista.

      best regards

[rant]here's another reason why i'll never buy another creative labs card. I have no idea what the hell they are thinking. they are shooting themselves in the foot[/rant]

        try this dude

An error in ntdll.dll could be caused by a corrupt ML database.
Try deleting main.dat and main.idx while Winamp is closed. That will clear the database.

        C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\ml
        or
        C:\Documents and Settings\<yourusername>\Application Data\Winamp\Plugins\ml

If no luck, a clean install mostly fixes crashes related to ntdll.dll.

        thanks siebe

Yeah, looks that way. But I now have this hardware (well, to be honest, for a long time right now), so it has to work

I emptied both mentioned folders and restarted Winamp. Up to now everything looks very fine, no crash. Thank you!

Is this a one-time-action or do I have to empty this cache from time to time?

If I've got further problems, I will check back here - thanks again.

          Greetings
