  • [5.51] Problems in Vista with filewriting plugins

I just migrated from a Windows XP laptop on which I'd had Winamp Pro 5.51, and brought my key through regedit over onto this one. I installed Winamp and started to load in my various plugins (inputs like AIFr for Relic Games' music, GSF, PSF, and USF, and the only output plugin I use, Chun-Yu's MP3 writer plugin). I had a WAV file I wanted to encode, but each time I tried, Winamp would "stop working" and I'd get a dialog box from Vista asking me to close the program.

I tried the media library transcoder, and got an error saying "cannot open encoder", when lame.dll and lame.exe are both where I'm pretty sure they need to be. I turned off UAC and that didn't help. I tried a clean install, and Chun-Yu returns a "Bad write", and the transcoder doesn't change. After the clean install (I lost all ratings and library settings.

Any ideas? Search here didn't yield anything, or maybe I'm not looking right.

You can only use Winamp's MP3 encoder if you have registered for pro. To use Winamp's encoder you need enc_lame.dll and lame_enc.dll present in the Winamp\Plugins folder. The former is Winamp's wrapper for the lame encoding library.

You can also only use the transcoder if it is supported by the input plugin, it will report "Cannot find decoder" if it is unsupported. As far as I know, none of these plugins (SNESamp, HE, 64th Note) support the transcoder.

As for this other output plugin, I am not familiar with it and can't really help you with it. But for your other troubles, do they still happen without any third-party plugins? Can you post a list of plugins and your system specs as detailed in the FAQ sticky thread?

Kapyrna is talking about the CD reader (CD to MP3 output) plugin (made by Chun-Yu Shei).

      @Kapyrna...

In addition to what J_Darnley said above, be aware that 3rd-party authored plugins are not supported here, and it's entirely up the the plugin author to revise/modify the plugin(s) so they'll work properly with the latest version of Winamp. It's best to contact those authors for updates. Although, the CD reader (CD to MP3 output) plugin (made by Chun-Yu Shei) is ancient, and you may have difficulty contacting the author for support/ and an updated version.

I am running Winamp Pro. What I want to do is write from files on my hard-drive to MP3. If there is an official plugin that I do not have that will output to file at 320 VBR, then I'd like to know. I have enc_lame.dll and lame_enc.dll both.

Well, if you have Pro then there is absolutely no need to hold onto Chun-Yu Shei's ancient plugin. And the "official" plugin that you are asking for is Winamp's own built-in Transcoder. You also said you have enc_lame and lame_enc. You should be able to right-click on any file(s) in your playlist editor, select Send to: > Format Converter and select the MP3 encoding format and options available there, to output MP3's at 320 VBR (as you are looking to do). If you have difficulty doing so, or you still receive that "cannot open encoder" error, then, as J_Darnley already indicated above...

So, as J_Darnley already mentioned, if you want one of our Winamp forum resident "gurus" to respond with help for your specific problem, then from the FAQ: Troubleshooters; Information Required When Posting; READ THIS FIRST !...

          Information required when posting

And make sure you also include that List of Plugins mentioned there (along with all other required/asked for logs).

Well, somehow the problem fixed itself. Not sure how, but I'm happy. Thanks for the help! Topic can be closed if need be.

              Aahhh... OK. Very good!
              And Happy Winamping!

              P.S.
There is no need to close the topic really. Leaving it open might be good for others who encounter the same problem.

Okay, this is getting really annoying. After a fresh install and losing all my ratings again (PLEASE, FFS, I WANT RATINGS TO WRITE TO FILE), my problem of not being able to encode to MP3 at all has returned. I can't rip from CD, I can't use the Converter (ml_transcoder), I can't use file-writer output plugins.

                  Remove "Relic AIFx Decoder (in_aif.dll)"

Make sure all of AIFF & IFF are selected in Nullsoft Waveform Decoder (in_wave) config (Winamp -> Prefs -> Plugins -> Input -> in_wave -> config).

You can add AIF;AIFC;AIFR to the Additional Extensions field, if required.

Make sure the Transcoder and any (Filewriter Output Plugin that you might be using) is configured to write to a writable folder (My Documents, My Music, etc), and not a protected folder (ProgramFiles, Windows, etc).

If the problem persists, explain to us exactly what file formats you're trying to convert to mp3, the exact method you are trying to use, and all the relevant settings (ie. relevant input plugin and transcoder format settings).

The Relic AIFx Decoder is to be able to open the .AIFR audio from the Homeworld games. Part of my intent was to open the .AIFRs and re-encode to MP3. Uninstalling the AIFx plugin is counterintuitive here.

Here's what I'm trying to do:
Be able to play a file that Winamp can open (be it MP3, FLAC, AIFR, WAV, or whatever) normally
Somehow get an MP3 of the same audio, just in a different encoding format. No matter where I try to write to, I get a "cannot open decoder" using the built in Format Converter. All track failed is all tracks failed.

I'm going to try the out_lame plugin when I get home from Uni. Maybe that will get past things. Will also try ripping to MP3 and see if I actually get anything in the files, instead of no payload like now.

                    Thanks for the reply.

This seems to be a functional workaround. Ripping to MP3 works now too, but the Format Converter still returns a "Cannot find decoder".

Only problem with out_lame is it won't save configurations for writing, on close of the config dialog box I get
Do you want to replace the config ''
                      with the new parameters ?
(otherwise the parameters will become current)
                      Y/N/C
And it crashes Winamp sometimes and I can't figure out why. Also, when Winamp closes, the plugin setting return to default. I suspect it's not writing the settings to whatever file (could be what's supposed to be between the '' in the closing box) due to the file not being there to modify or not having permission.

Remember, I'm running Vista, so My Documents has no "My", not does My Music or My Pictures, and the C:\Documents and Settings\ structure has been changed to C:\Users\ and inside my C:\Users\<me>\ folder is an AppData which I assume serves the purpose of personal configuration files. There's an XML configuration file but I don't want to fiddle with it without knowing exactly what I'm doing.

The 3rd-party AIF plugin doesn't support transcoding.
It's an old plugin that'll need updating to the latest Winamp API's if it's ever to support any of transcoding, replaygain, 24bit, etc etc.

Are you saying that in_wave doesn't support AIFR?
It can support all of AIF, AIFC, AIFF, IFF.
What's so special about AIFR exactly, and what makes it different to other AIF* files?

                        As for out_lame...
Although again, it's a 3rd-party plugin and not supported here, if I remember correctly, you need to open and save the out_lame.xml settings file in Wordpad, which should format it correctly.

Also, if out_lame hasn't been updated to support multi-user profiles, then it won't work at all on Vista, because Vista doesn't let programs write to the Program Files dir.

If Nullsoft in_wave supports AIFR then you should be able to use Winamp's built-in transcoder to convert them to mp3, no 3rd-party plugins required.

The Relic AIFx plugin is the only way to play AIFR fils, since Relic used an in-house compression algorithm for it. It's would be great if the plugin were to be updated to support the newer FDA codec they use now (which is essentially a tweaking of the AIFR codec). Using XP I was able to treat AIFR files as standard AIF, and Vista seems to work with that too.

Opening and resaving the XML doesn't change anything.

Okay, after a completely clean install, and nothing but Nunz's plugin installed, I still get a cannot find encoder error.

Please, does anyone have any ideas? Am I missing an enc_mp3? is my enc_lame the wrong version? Is Winamp not seeing the enc_lame that's already there?
