  • How do i correctly install ffdshow?

plz someone give me a step by step how to install ffdshow, including where to install in order for vid playback to work and also Gabest's MP4 Splitter? where to get and how to install. . . thx ahead of time

  • #2
    For ffdshow:
    1 - Download ffdshow
    2 - Install ffdshow
All MPEG-4 video formats should be enabled by default.

    For Gabest's spliiter:
    1 - Download spliiter
2 - Extract MP4splitter.ax to somewhere on your hard disk. Use C:\Windows\system32 if you need to be told a location.
3 - Install spliiter by running regsvr32 X:\path\filename.ax or just regsvr32 filename.ax in filename.ax is placed in the system32 folder.

It doesn't matter where you install ffdshow to, the installer takes care of the 'hard bits'. About the splitter, did you read the link I posted? Did you click on the MP4 Spliiter link? The only choice you need to make when you download it depends on your Operating System. It doesn't matter where you put the splitter either but then you need to register it correctly.

          Just to clarify...

The download url's are all referenced in the link provided:

          Gabest's MP4 Splitter
Download MP4 Splitter 1.6.8 : In order to play MP4 files, you must have MP4 Splitter installed.

Download the MP4 Splitter for Win2k/XP/Vista
Download MP4 Splitter 1.6.8.35 : fast downloads for latest versions of MP4 Splitter

Extract MP4Slitter.ax from the MP4Splitter_20070918.zip file
(eg. right click the zip, and select "Extract All")
          and extract it to "C:\Windows\System32"
(assuming that's where your Windows OS and System Folder are....)

Then go to Start -> Run
          Type: regsvr32 mp4splitter.ax
          Click OK

You will get a confirmation that the Splitter has been successfully registered.

Note that Windows 7 & Vista users will need to run the Command Prompt in admin mode.
Go to: Start -> Programs -> Accessories
Right-click "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator"
          Then type in: regsvr32 mp4splitter.ax

Download the latest version of ffdshow:

Note that you need to download the 32-bit version, not the 64-bit version (64-bit version has "64" in the filename), regardless of whether your OS is x64, because Winamp is a 32-bit program and therefore will only be able to use 32-bit splitters & filters.

Let it install to the default "C:\Program Files\ffdshow" folder
(or if Windows x64 then to "C:\Program Files (x86)\ffdshow")

Follow the onscreen guide/instructions (basically, just keep clicking Next)

On one of the ffdshow setup screens it asks you which video & audio formats you want ffdshow to handle.

For Video: Make sure H.263, H.264/AVC, Other MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, are all checkmarked, plus any others of your choice.

For Audio: Make sure AAC is checkmarked, plus any others of your choice.

          When done, open Winamp.

Go to: Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Input:

          Nullsoft MPEG-4 Audio Decoder (in_mp4.dll) -> config:

Remove MP4 from the Extension List, so it just leaves M4A there.

Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder (in_dshow.dll) -> config:

Add MP4 & M4V to the Extension List, so it now looks something like:
          MPEG;MPG;M2V;AVI;MP4;M4V

          And that is all :-)

I am having the same problem only hearing audio on the mp4 converted files. I was following the instructions up until this part...

'Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder (in_dshow.dll) -> config:'

I Looked im my plugins > input and it does not have the directshow decoder in there. Is that a seperate download I have to get? I've looked many times and it's just not there.

I have winamp 5.52. Please help.

Make sure "AVI/MPG" is checkmarked under the "Multimedia Engine -> Video Playback" section on the "Choose Components" page of the Installer Options.

Link for MP4 Splitter is wrong

                Correct link is http://www.free-codecs.com/download_...p?d=3830&s=513

And do link to homepage of MP4 Splitter: http://www.free-codecs.com/MP4_Splitter_download.htm

Actually, the homepage for the MP4 Splitter (v 1.0.0.3) is here:

With one newer version (v 1.0.0.4) being forked here:

But you are correct that one of Egg's links is wrong but, as we are being pedantic, that doesn't matter as how hard is it to follow the one that is correct and then click on the "Download MP4 Spliiter"?

Thanks for this- I have to play the videos a few times but it now reads the tags as well which was what brought me to this thread.

Radiohead "Live from the basement" are great to watch! (and cheap on iTunes)

                      Get ffdshow_tryouts

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow seems old, with the last release in 2004. It seems the right one is http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ (ffdshow-tryouts), which is actively being developed. You should probably get the installer for the latest stable beta release, which is http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffd...2&big_mirror=0 . The installation process is straightforward.

For MP4, I recommend Haali Media Splitter at http://haali.cs.msu****mkv/ . It also splits other formats like OGG.

                          i have one more question.
I have downloaded a file from You Tube: MPEG-4 file format
In VLC the video codec is AVC1 and the audio codec MP4-a
I followed your instr.Remove MP4 from the Extension List, so it just leaves M4A there.and in Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder (in_dshow.dll) -> config:it shows
                          MPG;MPEG;M2V;AVI;MP4;M4V
ffd video decoder shows Imput AVC1 libavcodec h264
The problem is: The video works but shows a scrambled screen
                          Any Ieas?
                          Thanks
