All Videos Have Loud Overdriven Sound

All of a sudden Winamp plays my videos with loud over driven sound. The same videos play in the divx player, windows media and Classic Windows media player fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp, but it continues. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Divx codec AND k-lite, but it continues.

I have tried various settings in DirectSound in winamp, with no help either. G-stop says the video files have an audio codec of mp3. I tried playing just an MP3 file and that plays fine.

Also tried switching from DirectSound to Waveout, still loud and overdriven. Tried turning on and off the EQ, and played with Winamp's volume, which does effect the level of sound, but continues to be overdriven.

Any ideas?

More information. I just played a SWF (flash) file which has audio and video and that plays fine (can't control the volume up or down for some reason). Also tried a wmv file and that works ok. mp4 also ok.

Seems to just be the mpg/avi files.
