  • Problems converting to MP3

    Hi all,

I am trying to bulk convert a load of WMA files to MP3, however when I start the conversion it comes up saying "Cannot find decoder", but then carries on with the conversion anyway just saying that 1 track has failed. Then randomly the conversion stops and I get the message "Error updating LAME-tag frame: can't open the file for reading and writing", however when I click OK it just carries on converting with only one failed file still.

There are about 4000 tracks I am converting and will be gutted if I get to the end after having to pretty much sit next to my computer the whole time clicking OK every few mins, only to find that it hasn't worked.

    Any ideas what's going on?

Have all the WMA files come from the same source? Or are you sitting there with random heap of P2P sourced tracks?

If the latter, then it will not be surprising that there are problems. Many P2P tracks are plain corrupted and incomplete. Or just badly ripped.

If you did the CD ripping yourself to WMA... then we will have more luck.

Are you just hitting one big convert of all 4000 tracks in one hit? Or are you doing batches of 500?

When you do get that "bad file": Does it playback okay? Does the track convert at the second attempt?

Another vitally important item - what state is your hard disk in? When was the last Error Check of the hard disk? And how badly fragmented is it?
