  • Memory usage when adding files

When I add files (just mp3's) to the media library, memory usage of Winamp will slowly rise to about 1.2 GB and than Winamp crashes. I know my collection is large (141 K +, 1TB) but other mediaplayers don't seem to have this problem. I found a workaround whereby I keep track of memory usage in taskmanager, cancel the adding files progress when it reaches 1.1GB memory, shut down WA, restart it and then continue adding. This method has worked so far but I would like to be able to add my music unattended!

Somebody know how to fix this?

    Specs:
dual core AMD with 6gb ram on M2N-SLI Deluxe
    Win 7 x64
Winamp 5.6.1 (Clean) installed on 2GB RAMDisk drive

check for some viruses, why dont you try to perform full scan..

No, can't be a virus. At least, not according to Norton IS, NOD32 or AVG. Furthermore, problem arises at my server pc and laptop as well. Seems to be the 'gathering of information' on the files that eats the memory

It's not a memory or virus issue. This has been a problem plaguing Winamp for years, but the developers refuse to acknowledge or do anything about it. There are literally dozens of posts throughout this forum complaining of this problem back to 2001, and not one single response from a Winamp developer or tech support even acknowledging it. They are either already aware of this problem for several years, or they are complete retards, or they are just giving everyone the middle finger and saying "have a really large media library? Tough crap. Use somebody else's media player to manage your library, cuz we don't want your business". I've been pouring thru these forums for the last 2 years hoping Winamp will eventually respond, but the only response I've seen is them removing responses like this one. They don't like bad press, but not enough to fix this growing problem.

@Nog69, thanks for your response, I was afraid of this... Well, I guess it's time to go back to Mediamonkey then. Or would you suggest another player?

As said, clean install of WA, so no plugins other than those already in WA itself.

would still make sense to provide a plug-ins list as sadly too many people have said that and it transpires and old plug-in is still there -> http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....161361#plugins

As said, just mp3 files. The drives I use now is a network drive, but I also tried it from my main drive (with OS on it) and on a secondary drive on the PC. So that doesn't seem to influence memory usage. Furthermore I tried the 'classic' WA skin to see if that would help.
When my library consisted of 50K songs I didn't have this problem either but since I passed the 100K+ line problems have persisted.
It seems that the number of files determines whether this problem occurs.

the first thing i notice is it says winamp 5.6

are you sure you are using 5.61, (not 5.6 or 5.601?)

may not fix your issue, but the db was improved. i don't recognize some of those dlls either but DrO would know better.

i have seen other forum threads about this kind of thing, but it would be better if we knew what the threshold is #wise for when it goes from working to problematic.

I downloaded WA from the main site yesterday, so I'm pretty sure it's 5.61. I guess "One for Nunz" just doesn't show that.
