  • Slowing Down Entire Computer

Hello! I'm running WinAmp Lite because it's a memory efficient mp3 player. My playlist is rather large. Almost 600 songs now. What I have noticed though is if I do not feel like listening to a song or songs and skip forward 3 times or more my entire computer just freezes up for 20 seconds then starts going about again. I can recreate this situation.

I thought it was the output but it is on DirectSound. Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this?

You have neither confirmed nor denied you have followed any of the instructions here:
Howzit....Whatzit...what tha...? How to tune up, and keep your Winamp player humming along. Search this Forum to find others who have driven down your road and have advice and tips to help you out.

Complete a clean reinstall of Winamp as outlined here: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=161361#clean

If the problem still persists, please provide/post all required information using the instructions as outlined here: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=161361#specs

Make sure you've installed the latest version of Winamp. As of this post it's 5.62.

Also, as a side note, Winamp is no longer called "WinAmp." It's just "Winamp" now (no capital "A.")

It is recent version as for everything else in that FAQ I posted the first part of the Guidelines already.

Clean reinstall: I've done that 9 times before making this post trying every version to get rid of it. Still persists. If you want me to get any more info just say.

a plug-ins list would still be useful. also one thing that might be something is do you have really large albumart embedded in the files (also what type of files being played could be useful) as large albumart can cause some slowdowns due to the extra processing needed to extract and load the image which may cause a bit of a delay with one file, but forcing multiple track advances quickly could exacerbate that.

though that shouldn't be causing a full machine lockup - so could be something else which is running on the machine and trying to interact with Winamp that you don't know and might cause it - just not sure of what that could be as you've a decent spec machine (if it was a single core then i could possibly understand it, not with a multi-core as much).

Yeah... lol not much on HiJackthis... I have no idea why it would do this just from a simple install. The RazorHID is new I just got it today so it has nothing to do with the problem.

I'm going to join in on this thread because I'm having similar issues. Here's what I did:

                - Did a clean install (this is version 5.581, yes I know it's slightly outdated)
                - Stripped the program of every single plugin except in_mp3 and out_wave
                - Set prebuffer size to minimum in out_wave, disabled tag loading in in_mp3
                - Disabled playlist item formatting, set loading metadata to "Load on startup" rather than "Load on play"

I then load a playlist with ~10 mp3s in it, and press Forward about 6 times. My entire computer halts for 30 seconds as it tries to skip ahead 6 songs.
The worst is when the playlist is full of files that are either very short (.wav files less than 3 seconds each) or files that no longer exist. Usually it halts to the point that I have to restart.

The only solution I've found so far is to downgrade to winamp 2.91.

                e: relevant system specs-
                Winamp 5.581
                SB Audigy
                AMD Athlon X4 3.3ghz
                Win 7 Pro x64 sp1

sorry but bug reports against old versions cannot really be used as only the current version at the time is the one which gets support of any sort (which is 5.62 at the time of this post).

though halting the system if the files are missing points more at what the files were located on... possibly a network drive? or maybe an A/V is running and that's causing the issue as Winamp relies on OS apis to determine missing files so if that's taking an age then there's not much Winamp can do.

and the short wav thing is mainly related to the output plug-ins buffer size - setting that to a lower value has been known to fix that quirk for some users.

Well, I found the problem. I tried clean installs of both 5.581 and 5.62 into a Win 7 VM - neither of them had any slowdown. Okay, so it's something with my environment. I turned off AVG and whatever services looked like they might be scanning files in realtime. The problem was solved (naturally, I should have checked this first) when I turned off "VIA HD Audio Deck" (the onboard audio tray icon/control panel). That was causing the lag for some reason, even though I had disabled that interface because I'm using a separate Audigy card.

Afroman, I see that VDeck is listed on your process list as well. I think that's what's causing the issue for you. I don't remember what happens to the onboard sound when you disable the control panel, but you could try closing the tray icon before you open Winamp.

Ok so I got a computer identical to mine but it's brand new. Put Winamp and Chrome in first thing. VIA HD Audio does not seem to be the problem so that eliminates that. I'll continue installing program by program testing this until I get the slow down and let you all know how this turns out.

Thank you all for your help but I guess if anyone runs into this problem I can let them know what's causing it.

As soon as I said that and put VIA HD Audio in Expert Mode it goes all funny. Gonna run more tests on this.

Ok tests have shown that it works fine in regular mode but expert mode it goes to garbage. Odd...

Looks like dogan2 wins... it's just VIA HD Audio all together now lol.
