  • MPEG2 - Files won't play with W7-x64

    Hello people,

Winamp doesn't play MPEG2-Videos. One hears sound, but there is no video. Unfortunately, I own a lot of them.
Of course I searched Google and the forums here, but couldn't find a solution. I found out that several people have this problem for several years now.

Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic (MPC-HC 64 bit) play these MPEG2-Videos fine.
I am using Winamp Pro v.5.63. OS is Windows 7 Professional x64 (all patches/fixes)
There are no codec packs installed, nor have been in the past - this is a relatively fresh installation.

I tried ffdshow and told it to use mpeg2 files, but that didn't work.
Of course ffdshow was removed by system restore functionality of Windows 7.

It's a pity because Winamp plays all of my other video files very well and is the only player which switches between different video formats in long playing lists with no problems.

    Any idea?

    Greetings,
    PiranhaMan

    It does on my system.
    I downloaded a file with .MP2V extension.
At first, it played audio only (distorted). Until I did this:

    Preferences > Plug-ins > Input
Select Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder (in_dshow.dll) and click Configure.
Add MP2V to the Extension List

      ryerman,
      thank you for your answer.

All of my MPEG-2 videos have the extension *.mpg or *.mpeg, which are already in the standard list in the Plug-ins/Input entry. So, this is not the problem. Renaming the files to mp2v doesn't solve the problem, because the file extension or the file name has nothing to do with the content of the file.

      Greetings,

I just tried a music video with the extension MPG and it played.
"MediaInfo" shows its video codec to be MPEG-2 Video.
I am not very knowledgeable about video files but if you upload one of your files to someplace like MediaFire and provide the link, I will try it on my system. Then we can rule out any problems with the file(s).

          Sure. Here we go:

Besides, i think that the files are not the problem. most of the files are very old and didn't trouble. The konfiguration of windows or winamp are imho the source.

            Winamp - no MPEG2-Video on W7 x64

            Hello,

i am able to reproduce the problem. On another machine, with Windows 7 x64 too, Winamp shows the same behaviour: sound, but no video with mpeg-2 files. In this case, it is Winamp (no Pro) v 5.623.
same here: windows media player and mpc-hc 64 play theses files well, but winamp does not.

WMP12 on Windows 7 uses Media Foundation instead of DirectShow.
              Winamp is a 32bit program.
Therefore you will need to have a 32bit DirectShow MPEG-2 Decoder installed for Winamp to use.

              Reinstall FFDShow (32bit version)

Make sure MPEG2 is set to libavcodec in ffdshow video decoder config.

              Download and run Win7DSFilterTweaker

(Note that the download is the executable, not an installer)

              Click "Preferred decoders"

Scroll down the 32-bit decoders list on the left (no need to touch/change the 64-bit decoders on the right),
and place a checkmark next to ffdshow (instead of Microsoft) for MPEG-2

It's up to you if you want to do the same for any of the other 32-bit codecs such as H.264, DivX, Xvid, etc...

Naturally, you also need to make sure the relevant file extension(s) (eg. MPG;MPEG;M2V;MP2V etc etc) is/are listed under
              Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > Input > in_dshow > config > Extension list.

If the problem persists, then we will need more information (Plugin list, dxdiag log, details about the videos)

                  Hi PiranhaMan.
I see DJ Egg came to the rescue and it looks like you are now configured correctly.

I downloaded your sample files before the links expired.
"Kajagoogoo - Big Apple.mpg" played without a problem.
When I tried "Sabrina Salerno - Boys.mpg", the audio played for a few seconds and then quit. The video never played.

Maybe my system is at fault, but if you see the same problem with your new configuration, I suggest that the file is "damaged" in some way.
When I select "View file info..." for this file, length is 0:00:00 and Bitrate is -2147483648kbps!
Maybe a header is missing or written incorrectly, or written in a way that Winamp does not recognize.

I copied the file using Avidemux, and the copy played properly.
