  • Can't make Winamp the default app for music in windows 10.

Whenever I try to choose Winamp as the default music player in Windows 10, it instead switches it to Windows Media Player

    From Default Apps:

    1. I click on the music app (set to anything)
    2. Winamp is on the list and I am able to click on it
    3. The screen looks like it flashes to refresh, but it shows Windows Media Player as the music player.
    4. I test, and I see that all mp3 files are associated with Windows Media Player

I think WMP might have an "agent" to keep associations. Open WMP and check its preferences for something like "maintain associations" or "make sure this is the default player".

    If that doesn't work, I don't know.

The issue remains with other versions

My case is the same as your first 3 points, but the mp3 files still not associated by default to any player. A couple of days ago I downloaded and installed the last update for Winamp 58_3660, after that, Winamp do not remain as my default player on Windows 10.

Then I downgraded it back to 56_66 version, but the issue remains.

For those of you who are absolutely convinced they do not have a program on their system which desperately needs Mediafeatures and/or Windows Media Player go to "Uninstall Program => Activate/Deactivate features" uncheck both Media Player and Media Features and restart your system.

Where is "Uninstall Program"? There's nothing by that name in Windows 10 Settings.

can change music default to anything EXCEPT winamp

I can set the music default to irfanview, vlc, or anything I want EXCEPT winamp.
This only started after downloading 5.8, so I reloaded 5.6 and now it has the same problem!!! Whenever I click on winamp as default it reverts to wmp.

                  WTF man??????

Come on, winamp dudes, I've used this app forever with never any problems.

Please don't make me go look for another music app, I'm too old to change.

Yes, MrSinatra, I went to "set defaults by app" and when I click on winamp the screen flickers and reverts back to wmp, just as it does in all the other default app setting methods.

Also winamp is not even showing up in the menus. The only way to choose winamp is to click on "open with" one file at a time. Not possible to enqueue multiple files. Very annoying, and quite frankly - unacceptable.

Seems to be some bug in the 5.8 version of winamp that stays in your computer even when you over install an earlier version like 5.6. Developers please fix.

when i go to set defaults by app, i get a long list of all my apps. i scroll to winamp. click it once and its highlighted and now shows a button that says "Manage"

i click that, and then i get a long list of filetypes i can associate with whatever app i want, including winamp.

if this isn't working for you, it may be ur windows, not winamp, is the problem.

                              problem solved!!!!

In winamp options I went into preferences/file types, disabled winamp agent and changed the file and playlist icons.

In shell options I de-selected everything in the context menus except "play in winamp" and "enqueue in winamp".

When I went back to my music files they suddenly all had the winamp icon again and everything now works in the same marvelous fashion it always used to.

I don't know which of the above actions did the trick, and I'm not going to go screw around with it any more now that's it's working, but maybe it might work for others, too.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help, and thanks especially to all the amazing people who have developed such an awesome program that has enhanced my music enjoyment so much for so many years. Really, thank you. You're all brilliant.
