Now that the 5.9 series has been released, the issues I was referring to with v5.666.3516 are no longer relevant. I'm waiting for the release of v5.9.2 before trying the Backup Tool with it.

Yes ChocolateAdventurouz you are correct. The tool has some minor issues with Winamp 5.666, but will do the job for the most important settings files. I can't speak to how well it does with 5.8. Also 5.666 hasn't been updated as well. 5.8 is not a true update. It is a wip that was leaked.

Starting with the Windows 7 OS update, Microsoft has made it more and more difficult for apps stored under the "Program Files" (for 64 bit apps) and "Program Files (x86)" (for 32 bit apps) folders to store stuff (like file associations) in the registry that doesn't strictly follow the Microsoft rules.

While there are valid reasons for these restrictions (like preventing an app from stealing the associations intended for another app), they are not enforced for other folders. I suggest using something like "C:\My Apps" as the parent folder, when these restrictions need to be avoided for older apps that are not designed to handle these restrictions. Then the apps themselves can write stuff (like their file associations) to the registry like they could do before Windows 7.

Of course, breaking or avoiding the OS rules may have unanticipated consequences.

This looks like an answer to the headache inducing problems with changing icons for individual audio files associates with Winamp [http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=455135]

Because In theory a user should be able to throw this portable version into lets say

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp Plus

and then associate one-by-one each format with EXE form this folder - and then change the icons for them without a sweat

If I remember correctly, you have at least an hour to edit your posts. After that it won't be fair to those who have read the post (and possibly acted on it), to come back the next day or later and find it changed.

there is none, you have to make so many 100's of posts before you are allowed to change username/password or do most anything else with your account.

nope, you can't change your username, only the admins have that power to change it for you, what you can do after around 40 posts is get an avatar

Off topic, but I've searched and cannot find answer...I've forgotton how I registered for this forum and now cannot find any page where password (or anything) can be changed. Do you know where we find user preferences for this forum? Thanks.

here are my notes for how to do this.

1a. install winamp, to get the options you want included.

1b. or do this with existing, rode-hard-put-away-wet installation. you will get only the options that have been installed.

2. go to the installation directory. (normally /program files/winamp)

3. delete paths.ini

4. run winamp, it will be like the first time. now it puts all its databases and .ini files in its own folder.

5. do something about winamp.ini:

a. run winamp and configure everything

b. or you may get away with using the old winamp.ini from C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Winamp\
(there were 4 winamp.ini's, that one is the one to copy if you are going to)

6. in winamp.ini change value of no_registry=0 to 1

(NeedReg, a few lines down, refers to registration)

7. COPY to some other folder.

8. uninstall winamp, to get all the entries out of the registry. you might want to run a reg cleaner as well.

9. the other folder is now your portable winamp folder. you may rename it, copy to a different folder on a different drive, it doesn't matter. (except for file associations)

WinAmp 2.95 doesn't write to winamp.ini every time you run the program. WA 5.81 does, however, so there may be problems (or irritation) if run from a CD.

(note, some later versions the routine goes like this:
1. install WA
2. copy that folder somewhere else
3. copy winamp.ini to that folder, delete paths.ini
4. uninstall WA
5. use the new folder)

As a method of exporting my settings I have been coping the whole content of

C:\Users\YOUR-USER-NAME\AppData\Roaming\Winamp

and never had any issues with this method

Sice the 2 versions have the "same" files and directories, I don't think that it will be a problem...
