Different Icons

I want WinAmp to be my main player for audio, but I want different file types to have different icons.

I remember earlier versions of WinAmp does this. Now all my MIDIs are using the lightning icon. I want it to have the "musical note" icon it had before, but if I change it, even the MP3s change to the "musical note" icon.

Is there any way to assign specific icons to specific files without affecting the others? (This question only applies to those files that WinAmp is the default player)

Not woth Winamp, but can do it with file types box in Windows Explorer (though Winamp might change them back)

Agreed, Winamp uses the same icon for all filetypes that are being selected in the Setup -> Filetypes options dialogue.

Try using the usual method to change the icons for filetypes, using the Windows Explorer (View -> Folderoptions... -> Filetypes), but it will be slightly complicated, since Winamp uses one file association item for all its assigned filetypes. You will have to uncheck midi file association in Winamp and create a new file type association within the Windows Explorer by hand for midis or anything else.

I guess there is no solution. I did not want to go to the folder options since I wish to have WinAmp play my midis. I am currently having problems with Quicktime playing them when I click on a link from a webpage, but WinAmp still takes care of MIDIs when I click on the files locally.

The Folder Options solution is quite simple really.

I'm not sure what version of Windows you have, so I'm going to use the Win98 menus as reference points. This will be slightly different in WinME/2k/XP (Yes, it always pays to provide this information if you want proper support round here)

1) Winamp -> Prefs -> Filetypes
Unselect the extensions you want to change the icons for.

2) Open Windows Media Player 6.4
Goto: View -> Options -> Formats tab
Select the relevant formats/extensions to make WMP the temp default player.
Close Options & WMP

3) Now goto Folder Options -> File Types tab

i] Scroll down for & hi-lite MIDI File
ii] Click the "Edit" button (Win9x) ["Advanced" button in WinME/2k/XP]
iii] Click the "New" (Actions) button

Action = &Play in Winamp (the & sign makes the P underlined in File Menu)
Command line = "C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMP.EXE" "%1"

iv) Click Okay
Repeat 3) ii] and iii]

Action = &Enqueue in Winamp
Command line = "C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMP.EXE" /ADD "%1"

v) Click Okay
Repeat 3) ii] and iii]

Action = Add to Winamp's &Bookmark List
Command line = "C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMP.EXE" /BOOKMARK "%1"

vi) Click Okay

vii) Back in the original Edit box:
MIME = audio/mid
Hi-lite "Play in Winamp" -> click "Set Default" button (or Enqueue, it's up to you)
Click -> "Change" to set the desired icon

Repeat as necessary for other filetypes
All the actions & command lines are the same.
The only difference is the MIME
eg. for WAV it's audio/wav
MP3 = audio/mpeg
MOD = audio/mod

etc.

NOTE: MIME settings only apply to Win9x. Thanks to Micro$oft, you can no longer edit the MIME settings via Folder Options in WinME/2k/XP.
The only way is to do it via the Registry, which I'm not going into here...
You shouldn't need to worry about MIME settings under Win2k/XP.


I strongly recommend that you leave M3U & PLS playlists associated via Winamp prefs.

To fix the QT problem
Goto: QT Prefs Control Panel
Change the drop down menu to "Browser Plug-in"
Click the MIME Settings button
Remove the crosshairs next to audio/mid | audio/midi | audio/x-midi
(double click to unselect)

Do this first, before changing anything in Winamp Prefs or Folder Options.

All problems solved . . . hopefully

Though, if any programmer is reading this, it would make a good application. Take the extensions that Winamp can associate too and make a SIMPLE icon/description changer

Well, yes... DrO or another 3rd-party developer might consider it. You can try PM'ing DrO or some other coder if you like, to bring your request to their attention.

But as far as Nullsoft devs are concerned, well, read my reply in this thread and you'll understand better what I'm talking about.
