  • wierd volume control problems

    My system is a Win95, Celery400, 256megRAM, 6gig harddrive, 4meg RIVA128 video card.

I have a Guillemot HOme Studio 64 sound card, top of the line at one time. It has always worked great. All sorts of special inputs and outputs, for home studio recording. What I USED to have was the volume control from windows had line, CD, wave, etc, Mulitple sources for recording, etc and another application that came with the sound card that controlled the same things. They both worked, either one reflecting the changes in the other. Also, either the MS CDplayer or the one that came with the sound card would work, again together with each other.

NOW, after installing WinAmp, I have the following situation:
1/ There is no CD volume in MS volume control. Many of the recording sources are gone.
2/ Line In changes the CD, I wonder if I have control over line in?
3/ BALANCE no longer works on master control of MD volume controls.
4/ The CD volume control on the application that came with my sound card no longer works, nor the CD player that came with it.
5/ The volume control on the WinAmp player does not control the CD volume, (I haven't checked other sources yet.)

I SHOULD have made a copy of the registry before I did the install. I will do this on any other future upgrades.

    "Weird" is an understatement.
In all the time that I've been on the forums, this definitley takes the biscuit. Never before have I heard of Winamp installation causing problems like this. As far as I know, it just can't be possible, because Winamp doesn't change any system settings, it doesn't install anything in the Windows dir (all files go in Winamp dir, with the exception of Microsoft's WMAudioredist.exe for WMA support in Winamp Full) and it certainly doesn't modify Windows default Registry entries.

It could be just a coincidence that these things happened around the time you installed Winamp? Yes/no/maybe?

Anyway, if I were you, I'd reinstall Soundcard drivers, preferably the latest versions, and I'd also consider uninstalling & reinstalling Windows Multimedia Components, particularly Volume Control (Add/Remove Programs Control Panel -> Windows Setup tab -> Multimedia -> Details).

It might also be a good idea to run a full ScanDisk & also check for viruses.

At first I thought this was going to be just another of those Winamp/Windows volume control related issues.

RE: Winamp keeps turning my volume up/down
Howzit....Whatzit...what tha...? How to tune up, and keep your Winamp player humming along. Search this Forum to find others who have driven down your road and have advice and tips to help you out.

But, it would seem I was mistaken this time.

btw, you might also want to consider replacing Winamp's default analog CD/Line-In input plugin (in_cdda.dll) with the digital CDReader Plugin and Jasper Gronde's Line Plugin.

Let us know how ya get on.
    I'm intrigued!

I will work on it tonight. I have a busy schedule, so it will be a couple of days before I get it done. GOOD suggestions, thanks!
