Winamp Server... needed!

one of the good things about WMP and itunes is that they can be servers, not just players. you can see WMP on a network and use DLNA to access the music, or with itunes, you can buy a little NAS that has an "itunes server" built-in and use your ipod to remote control it. (itunes itself also works like that).

winamp is falling behind with all that. the devs need to create a "remote control" droid app to go along with their droid player. and users need winamp itself to be a server of music, and it would be really smart to develop a stripped down version to use in low powered NAS units the way itunes server already is.

i also believe its high time winamp partnered with a hardware manufacturer and created a network media adapter for playing audio/video on stereos/TVs.

surely some regulars here agree?

let me restate some things...

there are now many apps to remote control winamp using a droid. the remote controls exist. and obviously, winamp droid app exists too. so the "ipod" part of it is done and exists.

what does not exist, is the ability of winamp on a computer, to stream its content to a DLNA device, like a PS3 or Xbox 360 or a BluRay player which is also a DLNA player.

if you had a winamp that could do that, you'd have something to rival WMP/itunes/airplay.

i would love to be able to play stuff on my stereo via winamp! not possible in a "makes sense" way now, short of hooking a computer up directly to your AV palace, (which i say really doesn't make sense, at least for most people).

many people would rejoyce! surely there is a hardware manufactuerer out there willing to work with you to do so?

Boxee with Winamp

This is a great idea. It would be great if you could use Winamp on the D-Link Boxee.

to be clear, winamp would have to be both a DLNA server and DLNA control point, and the hardware, whether it be the boxee or something else, like a PS3, would have to be a more "advanced" version of a DLNA renderer, specifically the kind that allows control of itself to a remotely located DLNA control point (/server).

they do exist, i think the PS3 already is one, they just aren't as common, its not usually a feature in the cheapo DLNA renderers.

DLNA Support

I too would love to be able to see DLNA support added to Winamp.

Specifically I would like the following to be available:

1. For Winamp to share it's library so that a DLNA device can access the contents (including playlists)
2. For Winamp to play through a DLNA device
3. For Winamp to access an existing DLNA server (i.e. NAS drive) on a LAN

Could someone please confirm whether or not there are plans to add DLNA support?

Winamp DLNA Server & Media Streamer

I had already seen the DLNA plug in so you can stream items from a server.

Unfortunately for me it takes too long to scan the folders so this isn't a very practical solution.

With regards of being able to stream content to a DLNA device, I've come across this package, but initial tests are disappointing:

It'll capture the output from a sound card and stream the content to any system via DLNA, but you need to mute the sound on your computer for it to be of any use. The output quality isn't so goo either.

Toshiba has a program called 'Media Controller'. If something like this were embedded within Winamp, then it would be a winner.

Well, to increase the speed of the plugin, I can create an DLNA database for winamp and sync it in an extra thread in background.

Btw, the plugin is not a DLNA server like that toshiba program. If you like to stream from winamp to a DLNA device you have to code an output plugin with a DLNA server.

After a little playing around, I've managed to get Jamcast to work quite well. I have a USB Sound Card that is a little more superior than the sound card on my Laptop. The result was actually a lot better.
